I was a big fan of the police until I finally had occasion to had occasion to interact with one in a professional capacity.

Man that bites, sorry to read about that mluitjens1031.

Maybe let the local newspaper and TV news hear about it. Power of the press may get you results.

This story, along with this quote, reminded me of this song.

When my car was stolen 14-15 years ago, I had to go to the police station to file the report. They found the car several days later and I picked it up at some impound lot. I can't remember what I had to pay, probably around $100 but honestly,I can't remember. Keep in mind that the company who towed the car and stored it on the property has costs to run the business so they need to get compensated.

$500 sounds a bit high. Be sure to chat with your insurance company to see if you can get reimbursed as part of your claim (minus the deductible).

Were you expecting to get the car back for free without paying any towing/impound fees? Who would pay the business that towed the car and stored it? The taxpayers?

He was expecting it not to need to be towed/impounded at all.

I've heard many a tale of the North Hollywood and Burbank police on Loveline, and it's never complimentary.

The issue I have with this is that the towing companies over here are absolute dicks. I've seen them ram other cars while towing a car and then drive off like nothing happened. I've also seen them tow legally parked cars and then charge folks $100 for impound fees, which ramp up on a daily basis. They once towed a friend's car from the parking space in front of my apartment, and when we went out to get them to stop, he demanded $50 in cash or our credit card numbers. When we said we'd call the cops, he shrugged, finished hooking up the car, and drove off with it.

They behave like that over here because they realize that most college students can't afford a lawyer to sue them over it. So they continue their behavior with no means of stopping them. Fuck towing companies.
