Re: Starting a Genesis Collection - Suggestions?
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Another game I have that I forgot to mention was Pirates! Gold. It's a really fun RPG/Adventure/Fighter. You sail around and steal ships, gold, do quests, and make alliances with with different factions. You can also do sword fights! So just a recommendation out there for any of you who've never heard of it.
Anyways, after buying Phantasy Star III I realized it wasn't the most valued - but I'm still glad I got it, and it was cheap.
I also think I saw Shinobi III among Golden Axe and Altered Beast so I guess I'll pick that up too. All the Genesis games they had were between 5-10 dollars I believe, it's a neat store.
I'll keep my eyes open for the other games you all suggested, but I have a feeling some of the others I'll have to scrounge off ebay. Particularly Shining Force and Lightening Force.
And where can you find a High Def Genesis? I might be interested in getting one down the road. The Genesis I have now tends to want to play in black and white off and on for whatever reason. xD

If you have a Model 1 Genesis, then I highly recommend getting the Power Unit Converter. It allows you to play Master System games on your Genesis, both the cartridges and the game cards. And it's cheaper than buying an actual Master System. So far I haven't had a single compatibility error with any Master System game.

A six-button controller is also a must if you plan on playing fighting games and/or Sega CD and 32X games:

A Game Genie is great to have too. Not only does it allow you to input cheats for games, but even better it acts as a pass-through cart totally eliminating region lockout and allowing you to play import games without a mod-chip:

As for games themselves, the Genesis is a goldmine of 2D gaming. Here's my top picks:
Action/Adventure:
-Castlevania: Bloodlines
-Revenge of Shinobi
-Splatterhouse 2 & 3
-Shinobi III: The Return of the Ninja Master
-Strider
Beat-Em Up:
-Altered Beast
-Comix Zone
-Golden Axe 1 & 2
-Maximum Carnage (Spider-Man)
-Separation Anxiety (Spider-Man)
-Streets of Rage 1-3
-X-Men 2: The Clone Wars
Fighting Game:
-Eternal Champions
-Mortal Kombat 1-3
-Mortal Kombat Ultimate 3
-Street Fighter II (and all it's variations)
Platformer:
-Cool Spot
-Ristar
-Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3
-Sonic and Knuckles
Run-N-Gun:
-Contra: Hard Corps
-Vectorman 1 & 2
Shoot-Em Up:
-Darius Twin
-Raiden
Other:
-Columns (Tetris-like puzzle game)
-Lethal Enforcers 1 & 2 (On-Rails Shooter)
-Space Harrier II (On-Rails Shooter/Over-The-Shoulder hybrid)

Also +1 for the Shining Force games. They can be more expensive but they are very good. Another that I don't think has been mentioned yet is Shadowrun. It's not cheap either though.
I'm pretty sure it was...Xeogred wrote:

Re: Starting a Genesis Collection - Suggestions?
Yes, I actually remember playing Lost Vikings on a friends Genesis back in the day. It was a fun game, especially if you had a friend to play it with.
Re: Starting a Genesis Collection - Suggestions?
I just double checked and yeah it is on the Genesis, it doesn't look like it got the second game though. Then again I've never liked the SNES version of 2 all that much, kind of prefer the real Saturn/PSX/PC version.
Cool comparison between Lost Vikings on the SNES/Genesis:
I wonder if it's best played with a 6 button controller though, if the game utilizes them, since I know the SNES version used up most of the buttons for a lot of stuff.
I played a lot of the various versions of SNES/Genesis games back in the day, but I definitely don't think I ever played Lost Vikings on the Genesis! The music seems pretty different so I'll have to check it out sometime. Anyways uh yeah, lol, very highly recommended!

Haha! I love the random Candy-Land level. I really want to find this game again now. I'm glad the developers went for the zany approach and didn't try and make it just a predictable medieval setting.

Some of my favorite stages as well, gotta love the bubbly cheerful music as well... it's twisted because those were definitely some of the toughest stages in the game! Heh.Sideroller wrote:Haha! I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Picked up Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master! Only 7 bucks with the box and manuel.
Does anyone know know about Rings of Power? I saw it for $20 in fairly good condition and it looked pretty interesting - but I didn't want to take a chance and waste the money. Just wondering if anyone recommends it or what it can usually go for.
