I used to play Unreal Tournament 2004 competitively and the shock rifle and sniper rifles (hitscan weapons) were very popular. These guns were very "arcadey" in the fact that there was no weapon bob and you could shoot them while jumping without any loss in accuracy (even while zoomed in). The game compensated for this with some great movement abilities (double jump, wall jump, dodge jump) and the shield gun.

You could put up a shield while retreating or trying to advance on an opponent if you preferred close weapons. This gun added a ton of strategy and made it so that good sniper players weren't ridiculously overpowered. You could pull out the shield gun and it would protect you until you were out of harms way, then switch back to a normal weapon and the shield would recharge.

Re: Being a sniper
Hands down the single most frustrating thing about Bad Company 2:

FUCKING WOOKIES sat at the back of our base doing absolutely fuck all, not even spotting or calling in tactical mortar strikes. Just sat there getting one fucking kill every fucking 10 minutes.
The most annoying thing is the Recon class is easily one of the most powerful classes in the game when you don't use sniper rifles. It's not uncommon for me to roll a Recon with C4, USAS 12 Automatic Shotgun, Shotgun Upgrade (more shells per magazine) and Grenade or Explosives upgrade (depending on whether there is any armour on the map) and absolutely dominate the opposing team by myself. (just ask PhilipofMacedon who has seen me decimate teams and take MCOMs by myself many many times. Or better still join us in game). The reason it's so powerful? Motion Mines. Instant legal wall hack. The only issue for these yellow bellied cunt hairs is that it means actually putting your KDR on the line. The funny thing? I often come out of games with 3.0+KDR anyway, and I was instrumental in the team's success.
But no, these stupid fucks are sat at the back of the base, wasting time, not supporting the frontline and just being massive fucking douchebags. Just so they can go "zOmg Ub3r 1337 KDR d000dz!!" Then you check their W/L ratio and they have like 0.7... I wonder why...
