Is this related to that thing where the Portal 2 transmission radio pictures were decoded from? If not can someone post a link to that stuff again anyway?

Number Stations were related to spy rings in the cold war, but some are still active. As stated in the first post, Cuban Spies were caught using one not to long ago (well now that I think about it it was a decade ago...).
In spycraft it is about keeping things simple and secret. John LeCarre can give you a great eyefull about this in his writings (I highly suggest Spy who came in from the Cold and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). Without going incriminating myself too much (from a life now long gone): Spies often use dead drops to transfer information. These can be as simple as a microsd card inside of a wad of gum under a bench in the park or as a complex as a car parked in the woods under camowebbing. The best way to think about it is a drop is alot like a geocache. There could be one right under your nose and you pass it fifty times a day, but only a select handful know exactly where it is.
