I still think the PC-Engine and the SNES both top the Genesis for good, playable, fun shooters. Sure, the Genesis has enough, but if you're out for shooters it's really not the best place to start.

Some of the best ones also require a Sega CD....

I picked up Lightening Force and it is pretty badass.

I saw that list at Sega-16 and it's helped me a lot. It seems there are more than few decent shooters on the Genesis. They can't compare to the stuff that came after, I guess, but I'm looking forward to digging into more of them soon.

I actually really like some of the slower shooters. Instead of dodging insane (and pointless) bullet fields you have to think about your position and deal with a variety of threats. The SNES also had Gradius 3, Super R-Type, Phalanx, Area 88/UN Squadron... Go to the link below for a full list.
