What games have positively influenced your life and how?
Re: What games have positively influenced your life and how?
Video games have helped me develop my killing skills. I get a head shot in real life everytime.

Sim City 2000. It taught me how to keep a budget and to always make sure you have more coming in than going out, otherwise bad things happen. I know it's basic money management, but as a kid it is hands-on visual examples that really help you learn.

Oh, yeah, I learned the same thing from it, but I didn't think of it.lwcook wrote:Sim City 2000. Try just about anything on ScummVM. Most of those games are available in a number of languages, either with text or voices. Even the kids games (Freddie Fish) are nice enough for an adult to play, and they shouldn't be too hard for a beginning speaker/reader to follow.Ivo wrote: Do you have any good suggestions of games to help improve German?

As a 5 year old playing Contra, I was taught that life is not fair...very quickly.

Although to be honest, video games probably did help my shooting skills. The first time I ever shot or even held a gun, a shotgun, I was 5/7 on the clay-birds. I am sure video games helped out a bit.J T wrote:I don't know whether tosaturnfan wrote:Video games have helped me develop my killing skills. I get a head shot in real life everytime.or

Re: What games have positively influenced your life and how?
Japanese games improved my Japanese skills tremendously in the early stages of my studies. Not in the traditional sense, but as far as learning dialects, lingo, slang, etc, that would only exist in games or certain time periods (I also read Japanese novels or short stories for this). Turn-based RPGs seemed to have done this the best. I remember beating my first Japanese language game, Final Fantasy V, with about 85% comprehension. It was a great feeling of accomplishment. I chose that game because I wanted to beat a game I have never played before in English.
Also, back in high school I met a lot of friends by playing fighting games at different arcades. Some of those friends I am still in contact with today. It was a great way to make friends outside of my high school.

I was so ADHD that doctors thought i was autistic. I couldn't focus on anything. Video Games were the first thing that i ever spent more than 5 consecutive minutes on. Not to mention video games taught me how to read.
