Re: Games that defined your life Top10 - With honorable mentions
I grew up with NES. So my list is gonna have a lot of those games:
-Super Mario Bros. (NES) - The first video game I truly fell in love with. Sure I played Atari 2600 before it, but it was just a way to pass time, I wasn't nearly as into as I was my NES. I played this game so much that it is forever ingrained into my eternal memory. I'm sure if I die of Alzheimer's, that this game's level-layout and music will be the last thing to go.
-The Legend of Zelda (NES) - At first, when I played this game, I didn't like it believe it or not. I was 7 years old, and I was expecting something like Super Mario Bros., and this wasn't it. Once I got over that and gave it a real chance, I became completely absorbed into it's world. Even my sister who normally wasn't into any video games except Super Mario Bros., was making maps with pen and paper of the dungeons.
-Bionic Commando (NES) - This had to be the most difficult game I had ever played up until that point. The game mechanics were so new and fresh at the time with the swinging arm as well. I played and played, and played this game until I had it memorized. And once I finally beat it, it felt like a huge accomplishment. I love it so much, I play through it still every now and then.
-Contra (NES) - This was the game of choice when friends came over. Pop that sucker in, do the 30 men cheat, and blow up some aliens together. Great fun.
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (NES) - Much like above, great for the co-op action it provided. But this game was also cool because we played the frick out of the Arcade at Chuck E. Cheese as a kid, and could finally play it at home too.
-Super Metroid (SNES) - I seem to gravitate towards games that have a high emphasis on exploration. And this was the first game that really made me fall in love with that (other than Legend of Zelda). Super Metroid was an experience that you got deeply involved with, for me it was to the point that I turn friends away from hanging-out just to venture further into depths of Planet Zebes.
-Resident Evil 2 (PSX) - This game was creepy as heck for me, and my one of my first experiences with a 3D game, as it was one of the games my mom got with my PSX on my birthday. It was hard as heck too, because I was adjusting to a 3D game world after years of playing NES, SNES, and Genesis's 2D games. And movie scenes just blew-me away. Seeing the opening scene was amazing, and the movie-scene where you first see the Licker monster was awesome.
-King's Field (PSX) - Nobody else seems to have love for this series but me. But I'm absolutely in love with and still hope and pray for a King's Field IV. It is a unique action-RPG played from the first-person view with a high emphasis on exploration. It also conveys a great sense of solitude and figuring things out for yourself.
-Neverwinter Nights (PC) - This is my hack-n-slash RPG of choice. There's just so much to do, so many items, so many monsters, so many areas, so many NPCs, and a great mod-community and online-play community for this game. And I enjoy the original more than the sequel. This is a Forgotten Realms title as well, and as such uses the Dungeons & Dragons rule set and world.
-Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (XBox) - This game was the biggest, most epic, most open-ended RPG I had ever played up until that point. I never had any idea a video game could be so grand in scope. I was immeadatly sucked-in after seeing it at my best friends house and was sold on getting an XBox. I had one the following week with Morrowind in hand, as well as Spider-Man and Halo: Combat Evolved. I loved the game so much that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for PC became the first game I ever pre-orderd, and I'm going to pre-order Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for XBox 360 this week.
Honorable Mentions: Crystalis (NES), Super Mario World (SNES), X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (SNES) Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis), Halo: Combat Evolved (XBox), Mega Man 2 (NES), Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos (NES), Spider-Man (PSX), Golden Axe (Arcade)

Hmm am not personally into Resident Evil as much but I can see what you saying about 3D games I still did not really get used to 3D game environments until recently with Zelda Twilight Princess.BurningDoom wrote: -Resident Evil 2 (PSX) - This game was creepy as heck for me, and my one of my first experiences with a 3D game, as it was one of the games my mom got with my PSX on my birthday. Up until now I've been a bit of a 3Dphobic
Thanks for this I just remembered why I chose to play Zelda a Link to the past it was actually because back then I wanted to play games that gave you a chance and the poster that advertised Zelda showed Link with 20 hearts so I thought oh great you got loads of energy I won't die so quickly.BurningDoom wrote: -The Legend of Zelda (NES) - At first, when I played this game, I didn't like it believe it or not. I felt cheated that when you start you have only 3 hearts but it didn't bother me too much because the copy I got was used so it had a file with a lot of hearts.
Ah the mind of a kid

1. Pokemon Crystal - Really got me into the RPG genra, as it was my first experience with RPG. The gameplay lasted me days and days. It was also my first GBC game. 2. Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past - Probably the best and most memorable adventure game I can remember beating. It's my number 1 best Zelda game 3. Tiny Toons: Busters Hidden Treasure - Not many people would mention this one, but I grew up playing this game on my Genesis for years and never getting tired of it. To me, it is the top platforming game made. 4. Syphon Filter - This great PS1 title is truely magnificent, it's like Metal Gear and Call of Duty had a kid, making this game. This got me in to PS1 gaming. 5. Final Fantasy IX - My first experience with the Final Fantasy games, and definitely not going to be my last. 6. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker - Besides the NES titles, this was my first experience with Metal Gear. And it truely didn't disappoint. It showed the great capabilities of the PSP library. It was fun to just look at the vast environments, from the forests to the desert.

Yes, this is different for me. Several of the games I listed are no longer among my favorites, either because they aged badly, or I just plain old played them too much.Czernobog wrote:I'd call this one different enough from those and more interesting because it's "defining your life" which to me is quite different from favorite or top games.
