Autism is certainly not an illness, disease or sickness (so the kid is not "sick"). There is not really much arguable here, I think any proper definition of those will not fit.

Autism is not necessarily a disability. Depending on the viewpoint it is either not at all, or it only is such if the degree of certain autistic aspects really impacts on the person's quality of life.

Also I think it was the kid's mother that brought the issue of autism up, not the kid himself. Some parents sometimes do more harm than good (often by having the same misconceptions of autism seen in this thread - although they have much more of an obligation to be informed if they have an autistic kid).

I guess since the only autistic people I've met are kids, it made a bigger impression on me.

Although my biggest problem with this story remains. It's not that MS didn't handle it right. It's that gamers care about this stuff. Did the fact that people could hack their FF7 save file, stop gamers from trying stuff like defeating the emerald weapon with only 1 character? Or did the Konami code stop people from trying to beat Contra without it?

I hate to pat Microsoft on the back for anything but they did right by this kid. Anyone else would have been banned. He just gets a slap on the wrist and gets to keep going.

I used to know a guy with very severe autism. He could not speak or bathe himself, and occasionally he wet his pants. I know he is an exteme case, but I would definitely consider him to be handicapped.

Yet another example of people living their lives without anticipating any consequences. And why should they? The majority of our decision makers (or Microsoft in this case) keep pardoning stupid things...err slap on the wrist as others have mentioned. I think criminals are encouraged to visit the state pen for the very same reasons. If I rob this convenient store, blow the shopkeeper's head off and, and rape his wife I can plead insanity and enjoy the luxuries of 4 squares, a warm bed, and a roof over my head
