I mentioned this in another post as well, but Gabriel Knight II: The Beast Within has a lot of actual historical info about King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the plot uses the mystery and lore about Ludwig II to fills in the blanks with a fictional story about werewolves and schattenjaegers (shadow hunters). The game even includes a fictional imagining of Wagner's lost opera, that was partially found in the 90s.

"Shadow Over Innsmouth" was turned into the film Dagon (and many others), which if you watch that imagining of it just feels like RE4.

Katamari is actually inspired by dung beetles, but I can understand the urge to equate "wacky random Japanese pop culture" with "being on drugs"...
