If you have a multimeter, you can put probes on the on the switch to check for continuity. See what it reads when you push the switch and when you release it. If it doesn't change, then the switch is stuck in one position.

If you can, take a photo of the back side of the switch

Unfortunately I do not have any of these tools. I use them daily as it is part of my training but I don't have any of them for personal use.

I can get a pic of the switch later on it. It involves taking the thing completely apart which I was hoping to avoid, but if it's not working, then I don't have many options.

Check for corrosion on the via/traces, it could look like tiny pieces of dirt.
I seen this happen to the original xbox, the eject button would turn on the system but would not eject the drive, the power button would turn on the system and turn it off right away. If you got the system going it would turn off and then on and then off or eject the drive.
if that's the case you will need to cut the trace and rewire it.

Well I finally got to the actual eject button on the board. It does appear there is some kind of corrosion on the switch and where it is attached to the board. All I have is my damn camera phone and I can't get a close enough shot without it being completely blurry and useless.

Would just cleaning it work or would the switch need replaced and/or more work needed? Is that the likely cause of the problem?

You can try to clean it using a fiberglass pen and adding some White Lithium Grease with a toothpick

Ok, well I did the best I could with the best I have at getting the corrosion off. It appears to be off and the system seems to be working just fine. I put wii sports in, played for about 10 minutes and everything worked just fine.

Before I put it back together I'm wondering if there is anything I should do to prevent the corrosion from coming back. I don't have lithium grease as you recommended Jinn. I do have some ceramic grease that I use for N64 joysticks. Would that be alright or should I just not worry about it.

Edit: I think the corrosion could have possibly come from the CR 2032 battery. The battery is located directly underneath of the eject switch. I'll be replacing that too just in case.

Nice job fixing the issue. Bet it feels real good to have resolved it!

Regarding the corrosion, just make sure that you don't store the console in a wet or humid location. Hopefully it was just from the battery and won't happen again.

It does feel good to have got it working, even more so since it was my sister's and not my own.

I got it completely back together, everything cleaned inside and out, with a new battery. Working good as new!
