But who was the first to make a 3D game?Hatta wrote:Shenmue is a remarkable game, really a classic, but don't give it too much credit for creating the sandbox style play. Consider Ultima IV, The Magic Candle, or Alternate Reality: The City for earlier RPGs that created a really rich world to explore.
I believe one of the reasons why Mario 64 was so amazing is because you were free to go anywhere in a 3D world.
Only 3 years later(almost the time difference between the ps3 launch and now) , Shenmue created a FULL 3D world with people, cities, a job to do, gangs...its a complete world.
I am must say Shenmue is a masterpiece only because it has been crafted to the smallest details. A lot of the times I was thinking "It would be easier, or more enjoyable if they did it this way" and they did, which proves they gave it a lot of thought.
Its really smart:
*You have to wait for the bus like real life, but you don't have to wait so long until it gets frustrating, just right
*There is action in the game, but not mindless action where it becomes pointless button mashing
*There are enough shops to go around and ask, but not so many that you get lost.
*All information are written for you in a notebook, you don't have to remember passwords or puzzles, as I had to in FF6 Opera scene.
*story unravels piece by piece, it doesn't get too slow, and it doesn't get too fast
you see, the more you pay attention the more you see good stuff coming out of this game.
