You could further divide this into 2D and 3D series.

2D:
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Lost Levels)
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World (SMB 4)
New Super Mario Bros. (SMB 5)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii (SMB 6)

3D:
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine (SM64 2)
Super Mario Galaxy (SM64 3)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (SM64 4)

ALL other games were spin offs (Land, Yoshi's Island, SMB2 USA, etc.), IMO. DK and MB aren't part of the "Super" series. They are completely different games that SMB evolved from. Technically, SMB is a spin off from MB, which was a spin off from DK.
except that Mario Land is actually called SUPER Mario Land... and Yoshi's Island has SUPER Mario World 2 in the title as well. So...

I know that Super Mario RPG wasn't made by Nintendo, but it is cannon right?
Nah, they're definitely spin offs of the main line.

Super Mario RPG was a joint effort from Miyamoto/Nintendo and Sqaure.

I love Mario Land. I'd put it in the mainline handheld series (just my own opinion though  ).

I personally think of the Super Mario series as all games beginning with "Super Mario" so SMB1, 2, 3, SMW, SML, etc.

So Super Mario RPG, Super Paper Mario, and Super Mario Kart are all part of the main series?

:x

no I guess not.

I suppose in my head I just think of the 2D sidescrollers to be "the main series" but I guess that's sort of "wrong." It's hard to not think of SMW as SMB4. And by the same token, SML is pretty much portable SMB. So yeah.
