Just to clarify, no, freemcboot does not fix dead lasers. It can be used to play burnt games (actually, just launching games using esr), and launch .elf's, most commonly used on freemcboot to launch hd loader/hd advance to play games off the hdd, which i assume is what youre talking about. Freemcboot doesn't do anything for your laser and, if your system reads discs after using freemcboot, the laser wasn't dead and somehow fixed itself or maybe burnt games are easier on the laser? I dont know but yeah, I REPEAT freemcboot does nothing for the ps2 laser. If its broken, its broken.

EDIT: Here's what the website says it is for.

"Free McBoot is a Launcher designed to launch external applications {ELF files}. If you want to run applications such as uLaunchELF, ESR, SMS, HD Loader or other ELFs you must add them. "
Systems: ATARI 2600 - NES - FAMICOM - SNES - N64 - GC - WII - GENESIS - SEGACD - SATURN - DREAMCAST - PSX - PS2 - PS3 - XBOX - XBOX 360 - GB - GBC - GBA - DS - PSP - NEOGEOPOCKET

Sorry for not being clearer but my point was that you can still use a PS2 with a dead laser via HD Loader (fat ps2) or Open PS2 Loader (all PS2s). The compatibility rate is pretty high.
