I recently purchased a portable Namco TV Games that has a four way stick. The detents inside prevent diagonal throws, great in Pacman. A four way Arcade stick is hard to come by and also limits the stick to certain games. I think if you get a good quality eight way Arcade stick that has the tactical feedback click of leaf switches, it will help in the four way movement of maze games. If real ambitious, a "Bacteria Mod" of a removable diamond hole template could be incorporated.

Because a good quality Arcade Stick is expensive, recommend getting a PSX version. There are PSX adaptors available for various consoles.

EDIT
A pic of a 5200 4-way adaptor. A diamond shaped cutout limiting movement for Pacman. I have two of these and they actually work for the non centering 5200 pot sticks. This concept, but a cleaner flat plate that can be popped in or removed with flush pins
