This is not true. There are free options like the MS stuff and AVGFree. I'm sure there are others. Yes some sales were lost, but the problem is that it is impossible to reliably determine how many.thus the antivirus industry as a whole has lost sales. You can not deny this fact.
I'm not trying to quantify anything. Just pointing out that a large percentage would likely buy something. People can certainly believe their free program is protecting them, but I don't believe they do anything. I used free programs for years and my computer was always infected with viruses. Since switching to Norton 2 years ago on my new PC, I've not had one issue. A large percentage of these people would either pirate something else or get a free program rather than purchase a different AV. I used to have Norton on a machine of mine; one day Norton updated and restarted the PC... turns out it somehow screwed up and corrupted something in the Windows bootup so the machine would blue screen at the same place loading XP even in safe mode. Only way to get it working was a reformat and fresh new install; since then I have vowed to never use paid-for antivirus. If you pirated the dispenser then yes you would walk out of the store with one, BUT the ORIGINAL dispenser would still remain. Hence the store doesn't "lose" money, because the original product is still there and you were never going to give them money in the first place.
