I picked movies. As for the why... I dunno, maybe because I'm a douche bag.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

Definitely music. Amusingly I didn't really get into it until I heard New Order - Substance when I borrowed a friend's Walkman on a bus ride field trip when I was a freshman in high school. I borrowed the tape for the weekend and pretty much listened to it nonstop all weekend. Soon after I borrowed a pile of new wave and industrial tapes from my friend and I was doomed.

Music was the first thing I started collecting and I own more music than I do games at nearly 1300 CDs, records, and tapes. I do have a few things that are 'crap' that were given to me in collections from friends or were poorly informed purchases on my part, but most of it has merit to me at least for the correct mood.

I am most pretentious about beer, basically because most people willing drink garbage. I try not to be snobby about it though.

And the beer talk has made me want a Coffee Stout...I think I have one left.

Oh, I voted for music.

Music, with video games at a close second. Basically I won't shy away from consistently calling the new-age artists awful. Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha...holy hell I hate these people. If you play me anything made before 1995 (except country), I'm okay with it (even hip-hop), but to hell with any pop made after the mid '90s.

And for video games...I just hate Call of Duty and Halo. And I've lost a Facebook friend over it. Still don't care, he deserved to be yelled at for skipping class to play Black Ops.

I would use the word "elitist".

That's not how I understand the word pretentious. Snobbish is more like it, I guess. Random House (via Dictionary.com) says:

–adjective
1. full of pretense or pretension.
2. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
3. making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious.

—Synonyms
2. pompous. See bombastic. 3. showy. See grandiose.

So yeah. What are you an ass about?

Sorry I didn't add food/beer/liquor, but I was limited to 10. I fall into almost all of these categories myself (as well as beer/liquor), but like many of you I am most pretentious about music first, movies second, and probably games third.

Beer is in there somewhere too...

Pretentious derives from pretense. It refers to putting on airs of culture that you don't actually have. If you are authentically cultured then you might be a snob, but you're not pretentious. If you refuse to drink anything but Guinness because it's imported and has a good reputation, you're being pretentious. If you've tried every beer you can get your hands on and have found Guinness to be the best, that's authentic.

Now, am I being pretentious about the definition of pretentious?
