As far RPGs that I didn't see named...
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, especially if you like the Persona games.
If you like dungeon crawlers, I suggest Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and The Dark Spire
Oh, and I'm going to say it. The Pokemon games are great. I don't care.
The Front Mission games on the DS is my personal favorite of the series. It's a remake of the original on SFC.
As far as non-RPGs, Bangai-O Spirits is great, as is Metal Slug 7.
If you don't have a GBA and you want to play GBA games, get a lite. If not, then I would suggest the XL then. To be fair, I have large hands too, and have never had a problem with the size of the XL, although I do have skinny fingers...
Probably getting a DS, need some good rpgs and kids games

Re: Probably getting a DS, need some good rpgs and kids games
For kids I'd suggest a Nintendogs game. (That's all I can think of right now...)
---
As far as rpg's go, everybody else has the genre pretty much covered except I don't think that the Rune Factory series has been mentioned. It's basically Harvest Moon with an action rpg twist to it. You farm, go in dungeons, battle monsters, et cetera, et cetera...
As for non-rpg games I suggest the games made by Renegade Kid: Moon & the Dementium series. For story-based/puzzle solving games I recommend Flower, Sun, & Rain and Hotel Dusk: Room 215.
And here are others I'll throw out for you:
Korg DS-10: Synthesizer--- It's what the title suggests. It's a Korg synthesizer for the DS. It's a whole lot cheaper than the $500 average you'd pay for a real synthesizer so naturally it does have limitations that a DS cannot produce.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime--- You're a slime from the DQ series and your hometown is under attack by other monsters. But you don't just fight them empty-handed---you fight them with TANKS!
Tetris DS--- Kind of obvious but if you can find it cheap it's worth picking up. Just don't spend the $60+ people are asking for online. I got it complete at GameStop for $35. That was still a little expensive for a used DS game but I think it was worth it.

Re: Probably getting a DS, need some good rpgs and kids games
Dungeon Crawlers can be summed up in three titles:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
Phantasy Star Online Portable
Those are the only three I view as worth the cost.
As for other RPGs:
ChronoTrigger DS - Considered by many as the Directors Cut of the game
Final Fantasy III - An oldschool JRPG remake - grind heavy
Front Mission - Strategy RPG
Drone Tactics - SRPG with bugs - its soso, but can be obtained for cheap
Magical Starship - A great followup to a Japan only GBA RPG
Pokemon
Kids games I do not know, but Ive yet to find anyone who cant find a game worth playing in Clubhouse Games. Heck I bought it to learn how to play Shogi, instead I fell in love with Backgammon.

To add to fastbilly's dungeon crawlers, try Shiren the Wanderer (hard as fuckall, no saves), Izuna 2 (slightly more forgiving then Shiren), the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, and the Etrian Odyssey games (start with 2 or 3).
As said before, there's good remakes of FF4 and Chrono Trigger, as well as remakes of Dragon Quest 4 and 5. TWEWY and Dragon Quest 9 are good too.
Scribblenauts is a fun game, but Super Scribblenauts has slightly better controls, and you can't plow through everything with Jetpack, Rope, and Cthulhu.
For a unique game that utilizes the DS controls well, try Lost Magic. It's fun, and there's a lot of RTS elements if you're into that.

Re: Probably getting a DS, need some good rpgs and kids games
How are the games Strange Journey and The Dark Spire? I've had interest in them, but I've yet to get them. I am a huge fan of dungeon crawlers. soul_hacker, I see you mentioned both of them, would you mind giving me a run down of them? I don't really like the Shin Megami Tensei games, but this one seemed down my alley.
Re: Probably getting a DS, need some good rpgs and kids games
Kingdom Hearts if you're into action rpgs. Nice graphics. Starts out slow, though. And I kind of hate how the game seems limited and doesn't really allow you to explore and interact with NPCs (it has no NPCs outside of the characters that are vital to the KH universe). Every fricking town is empty.

If you are going to get a DS at this time, I would just wait and get a 3DS

Or if he just wants a regular DS he could just wait until the 3DS comes out and the prices get lowered even more.BlackDS wrote:If you are going to get a DS at this time, I would just wait and get a 3DS
...But this is getting off topic...

I'd recommend a DS lite if you do eventually plan on getting a 3DS. If not, the XL is your best bet. I've considered getting one but I can't let go of my good ol' original DS.

Re: Probably getting a DS, need some good rpgs and kids games
tnx guys. Quite a few suggestions here that i gotta sort through and check up on the games. I'll try to compile a list of what sounded good then come back with any questions.
that link provided here
http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Nintendo_DS
looks pretty good i'll have to scour that over along with the sugestions given.
On the subject of what DS to get :Several of you said the XL is probably the way to go. Have any of you actually compared it side by side with a regular DS? Im really concerned games would look blocky or poor. It just seems strange to me that something that much bigger, but the same resolution would still look good. Im also not really sure if i should consider backwards compatibility an issue. Are there any GBA games i should really get? They're so old id have to do some ebay hunting to get them. Im not sure if its something i should consider a lite for. Someone on another forum sugested something called a Supercard DSTWO along with an XL. but im not really sure what that does. I googled it but it just came up with a bunch of pirate sites. If it lets you play backwards compatible games maybe its worth it? Really the only thing keeping me from getting an XL is concern over the image quality being worse, AND wondering if theres a reason i should care about GBA games for backward compatibility
I should also clarify something: Im not particularly looking for remakes. I have almost every ps1 rpg, and a lot of SNEs and genesis ones as well. I'm buying any remakes that look interesting for the PSP, so unless its an exclusive remake, and they actually added stuff to it, then its probably not really worth it. I.e. the FF ones i am not interested in. Chrono trigger i have for the ps1 AND SNES, so unless they really added a bunch of stuff its not really worth it either.
As for Kids games i should be clear. Im not looking for stuff like toy story, or kirby games. I mean really simple things like maybe nintendogs (which one person recommended), that she can play with the stylus. Something someone who hasn't played games before can get into, thats very basic. Preferably involving cute animals or something.
That said i really havent got any kids game recommendations other than Nintendogs. Is there anything else along those lines? Anyone got any kids games they can suggest at all? Theres a lot of kids games on the DS but im sure a lot of them are garbage.
anyway thnx for the sugestions so far, I"ll have to go through them. In the meantime if anyone has any other RPGs that stand out or fun games to sugest im all ears
