Pulsar_t wrote:Full motion video (FMV) based games are video games that rely upon pre-recorded TV-quality movie or animation rather than sprites, vectors or 3D models to display action in the game. In the early '90s a diverse set of games utilized this format. Most games' mechanics resemble those of modern music/dance games, where the player timely presses buttons according to a screen instruction. Other games were early rail shooters such as Tomcat Alley, Surgical Strike and Sewer Shark. Full motion video also allowed the creation of several interactive movie adventure games, such as Gabriel Knight II: The Beast Within, and Phantasmagoria.
Aha, putting this way , then I must say I can't say I really like FMV games or not because I hardly played any.
I recall once back in maybe '94 I played maddog mcree , but can't recall any other just video games.

The ony I LOVE is phantasmagoria , but that one is more like point and click adventure.
I must look more into this kind of games.

What is considered the FMV console?

Dragon's Lair and Mega Race would probably be my favorites, although I generally don't care for the genre.

Yeah, I guess so. I remember 3DO mostly for its versions of Gex, Doom, Super Street Fighter II, and Stellar 7, and for having the only console release of Quarantine that I'm aware of. I remember the CDi mostly for Burn Cycle.

Man this remembers me that I have yet to play Super DonQuixote and Thayer's Quest. I should check if I still have the video files for Daphne (Arcade laserdisc emulator) around.

I used to play Cliff Hanger. Horrid voice acting aside it's actually quite fun but the difficulty is higher than Dragon's Lair. I got to the Ninja battle scene before running into problems with the overlay I was using for MAME and Daphne.

Ah, if you want a fun little game you can play Badlands, a game only played with one button. It has hilarious death scenes.

Contrary to popular opinion and ignoring obvious cheap difficulty
(Attacking the skulls in Dragon's Lair, for example, leads to death even if it's the most obvious thing to do) I think most laserdisc games are based on situational awareness and not memorization.

Lance Boyle rules!

I enjoy FMV games in the same way I enjoy cheesy b-movies and slasher flicks. The greater the schlock, the better the game.

I loved Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, and other laser disc games as a kid because they blew my mind with the graphics (it was the 80s and these looked like Disney cartoons. It was amazing back then). But now, they coast only on the fumes of nostalgia as the games are not particularly fun to play. They are somewhat entertaining because they made the death animations funny and you die a lot so that was needed, but really it's nothing but quick time events, which don't make for much of a game.

Now, I prefer the FMV games that combine Point & Click adventure with FMV. I like the Phantasmagoria games and Tex Murphy games. The Wing Commander games were good too. I remember when Wing Commnader 3 was released and it was so cool to see Mark Hamill (LUKE!) in a space adventure other than Star Wars. I have a few others as well such as Temujin and Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within, but I haven't played them yet. I'm also wanting to play The Journeyman Project and I've really been hoping for GOG to release a copy of Ripper because I NEED a game with Christopher Walken in it and Blue Oyster Cult. Finally- an appropriate amount of cowbell!

By the way, I figure it is worth mentioning that you can play the cheesy FMV Plumbers Don't Wear Ties on youtube. It's possibly the worst FMV game ever.

Start with this clip and you'll be able to click within the video at all the choice points:

I remember playing a lot of Mach 3 in the arcade when I was little. Though it's video background and plays more like Afterburner as a rail shooter. Watching a video of it now I probably don't want to try and play it and I'm better off with my happy rose colored memories.

off topic, (in my own thread haha) but the saturn got a release of quarantine in japan, but it was called "death throttle." yakumo at segagagadomain gives a pretty scathing review of it here.
