I think you're thinking of Yukes there, who are behind the Smackdown series, which was based on the TR series. Though 4 seems to have been developed by Tomy Corporation...

yes i agree graphic are puke, actually i was never a fan of N64 graphic style. Games had simple polygons that looks very bland and the color leaked everywhere. Also there was alot of things in the games that just looks like paper cut out.

The overall look of games on the n64 was just very washed out. It was like basic polygons with a mixture of 2d sprite, seems like they didnt know wether to make it all 3d or just 2d.

But anyways i did own and played it many of times back in the day and its really good game.

I ALWAYS thought Wrestelmania 2000 and No Mercy looked horrible, even back then. I liked the gameplay though and the games captured many of the little nuances that made wrestling fun. AI was cheap as hell though, but there were ways around that.

I always liked the Smackdown games from Yukes better. Better presentation and less cheap, not as deep though. Can't have your cake and eat it too. Haven't kept up with them in the past few years though. I pretty much lose interest in a franchise when it's pumping out new installments on a yearly basis. Truly great series usually take a few years between installments. Sports games and wrestling games just feel like soulless cash cows to me today

Yeah I also always thought that the N64 wrestling games had horrendous graphics, even when they first came out. I had played the Smackdown games on the Playstation, and so obviously the N64 wrestling games absolutely paled in comparison to those, graphically.

But graphics are most certainly not everything. I mean, seriously, am I on the Racketboy forum or the official PS3 forum?

The N64 wrestling games, specifically WWF No Mercy, are the best wrestling games ever. They might not have had the fancy graphics of the Smackdown games, but they made up for it with the fantastic gameplay mechanics, controls and in-depth gameplay. I still play No Mercy occassionally to this day.

Overall btw, in regards to the original post, I'm not a fan of wrestling, but I actually do really love (good) wrestling games. Some of my favourites are the AKI N64 games, the Day of Reckoning games on the Cube, and the Fire Pro Wrestling games. In fact Fire Pro Wrestling D almost gives No Mercy a run for its money.

One thing I like about the N64 wrestling games that is unfortunately absent on the recent PS1/2 smackdown games is the end match replays. I used to enjoy ending the match with a kickass finish and watching the replay a few times.

I always thought psx graphics for wrestling games was better,
not my opinion ,, I just THOUGHT...
maybe because the psx ones had video and better music so it deceived me overall ...

speaking of psx n64 graphics, without a war...has it been settled which graphics are better or not?

I think as far as hardware specs go, the N64 had better graphics capabilities but it was held back by storage limitations of the cartridge format and the fact that PSX had more developers taking advantage of/experimenting with the hardware.

IMO, the N64 had smoother 3D but with reduced texture detail, while the PSX games were able to go hog wild on textures but the polygons were pixelated, so it could go either way depending on the game and your preference. The thing is, both had very crude 3d capabilities compared to what we have today so comparing the two would be like comparing N'SYNC and the Backstreet Boys on the basis of which band was the most heterosexual.

When it comes to 2D, the PSX would most likely slay the N64, since 2D would depend a lot on texture memory and storage space due to the absence of dedicated 2D hardware on both, it's also probably worth mentioning that the Saturn would rape both the N64 and the PSX when it comes to 2D graphics :P

ANYWAY, I was 10 years younger back then, I thought they looked just fine and enjoyed beating the shit out of everybody.

And yeah, I remember people criticizing the graphics back then too, it's really just whatever you want to say yourself about it, they were really just made as well as possible despite hardware limitations.

i believe your talking about Wrestlemania 2000 here.

when i first bought WCW/NWO game years ago, i was blown away how it plays. the graphics i thought at that time could be better.

then came Wrestlemania 2000! it was finally great to use the WWF(E) guys with the WCW/NWO gameplay and improved graphics (but still not better). IMO this game is better than WWF Attitude.

Enters WWF No Mercy! This version improves the other two games in both presentation and creativity. I still play this game from time to time and creates current WWE/TNA superstars when i'm bored or got nothing to do. This is by far the best wrestling game i've played to date. They need to remake this game! AKI/THQ get to it!

yeah the wrestlers that I mentioned aren't from WCW/nWo but I own all three games and it kinda goes for all of them. I should have been more clear though.
The AKI wrestling games were far superior to the Acclaim ones (i.e. War Zone and Attitude). WWE Day of Reckoning and it's sequel used the same fighting system and had amazing graphics to boot, so definitely check them out if you like the AKI N64 games.

Similar but not the same. AKI wern't involved with the DOR series which is a shame.

Yeah I agree. The Def Jam games were developed by AKI though and are quite fun.
