It really depends on the extras (and for the purposes I'm going to assume that limited edition costs more than non-limited). If a game comes with extras I'm actually interested in and I think they're worth the extra price hike then I'll go for it. For example, the first Blizzard CE I've bought was for Starcraft II. The tipping point was that it came with the Raynor keychain with Starcraft & Broodwar on it. The art book was always something I was interested in, but never enough to justify the high price on other Blizzard CEs.

I look at limited/collector editions the same way when considering a purchase. Most collector editions are generally not worth it. The extras are hit or miss I like getting art books or figurines but I don't generally care for exclusive DLC. The packaging I agree with others can be annoying when trying to fit it into your gaming library on the shelves. :D

I used to for PC games. In the mid-200s, it pretty much every damn PC game had a regular edition that came on CDs and a "Special Edition" that came on a DVD and had some little book or some shit that apparently warrants a $10 increase. I'm looking at you, FEAR.

The Halo 2 LE with its metal case is still one of the most awesome LE releases ever.... And its case was not funky, or misshaped for a collection

Another question is, exactly how limited are some of the limited editions?

I don't buy the limited edition of every game I want, however I am totally a sucker for big boxes full of useless goodies that come with my games.

These days? Not very. That's why you see absolutely bucket loads of them second hand shortly after launch.
