I have both a Neo-Geo AES and MVS cabinet running Metal Slug 3 and Bust-A-Move and if you want the cheapest solution then I would recommend either the MVS cabinet since MVS carts are generally cheaper for the most part compared to AES versions or Neo-Geo CD. :)

From what I have been told MVS is the best option for your cash. You also get the fun of working on a cab if that intrigues you :)

The problems are with multi game jamma cartridges where games are not playing like the originals , sound problems , slowdown and frame skipping like the Blue elf , i think the multi MVS carts like the 130 in 1 play perfect although a lot of games are just multiple hacked versions of the original , like 8 different KOF 1 versions .

i've got an AES with MVS converter, and it's been pretty easy-going as far as prices are concerned. it's still one of the more expensive game collection subsets, but it's rewarding and fun.

http://renard-v.livejournal.com/107267.html#cutid1 here are some resources i put together for people interested in starting up neo-geo collecting. i've had nothing but good experience with the people listed :]

Neo Geo CD would be the cheapest.. I have one and love it. My main issue with the CD isn't the loading (although some fighters do suck) but a lot of the later games were never released on it (Metal Slug 3, Shock Troopers..) Recently bought an MVS though and nothing compares :) Just an awesome experience..and the carts mostly all reasonable compared to the later era AES carts. Keep an eye out on Craigslist for a cab... that's where I got mine.

I've included all of them in this zip. Extract it to get the pictures.

I know you are looking for original hardware but for me, the PS2 route was significantly cheaper and got me a "good enough" solution. You could always buy one of these PS2 Neo Geo sticks
http://www.neogeoforlife.com/viewpage.php?page_id=282

and pick up great titles such as:
Metal Slug Collection
SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1
Samurai Showdown Anthology
World Heroes Anthology
Neo Geo Battle Coliseum
Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol 1 and 2
Art of Fighting Anthology
King of Fighters (various games)

You could even play them on a backward compatible PS3 to clean up the textures and load times a bit. This ended up being the best bang for the buck for me.
