if its a SATA II drive then make sure to fix the jumper to make it think its just a SATA drive on the hdd itself.
Stops having to reset the machine to get it to work - a minor annoyance which happens every now and again on the old fat models if you dont have the jumper connected - dont know about Slims.

I'm running a western digital 7200rpm drive in my ps3 with zero problems, although I will say that I've hardly noticed any improvement in load times.
