Not platformers by most accepted views.

???

I have never met anybody who held the view that Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. weren't platformers.

If they aren't platformers, then what are they?[/quote]

Arcade games.... Or something. I would never really call Donkey Kong a platformer. And Mario Bros. isn't a platformer either.

What would you call a game where you run around on one solid surface just jumping over enemies as they come? Whatever that answer is, I say that's what Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. are. Either way, they should be distinguished from Super Mario Bros. type platformers.

Awesome... awesome to the max!

I thought the term platformer meant there are usually various "platformers" - whether the screen scrolls or not - that the player can jump on and move around on. Like the platforms Mario climbs and jumps over enemies on in Donkey Kong. I guess you could say that Super Mario Bros. was Mario's first 2D sidescrolling platform game, but his third platform. Although, I also though that Mario wasn't called Mario in Donkey Kong... or is it that he wasn't a plumber in Donkey Kong, but his name was still Mario. Wasn't it Jumpman at some point?

Twenty-five years ago today, Mario became super.

A toast! May your cartridge pins never get grimy; may your NES never blink; may your thumbs never blister; may god smile down upon you from coin heaven. Let's raise a glass to everyone who still plays Super Mario Bros. Cheers!

If you're not jumping from platforms to platform it can't be a platformer. Either way, I would never consider it a platformer.

Donkey Kong has those elevator levels. A change of scenery and clearly jumping from platform to platform. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9N4tQ_9ako
Doesn't make it any less boring though, haha
& Can't hold a candle to Super Mario Bros!
Easily in my top 5 of all time and probably the one game I've played the most

Two Halloweens ago my kids dressed up as Mario and Luigi. Yesterday, I kid you not, they both randomly found their old costumes and all day wore the Mario and Luigi hats we had made them. I wasn't even aware it was the 25th anniversary until I took the kids to a print shop today, the boys still donning their hats, and the clerk said, "Wasn't the Mario Anniversary yesterday?"

:D

don't make me screen-cap me jumping form one platform to another in Donkey Kong.
