ZERO chance of that happening. If you'd ever stepped foot on a Japanese commuter train or in an elementary school in many countries lately, you would never have said that.

Much of Sony's success belongs to Sony. They didn't make any great games, but they changed the way the industry did business.

1) By greatly dropping licensing fees, and making games much faster to manufacture (a few days compared to Nintendo taking months)

2) Treated games with more respect than children's toys, and marketed them to a wider demographic.

3) Opened up to new markets.

and much more, just read the article, it's a really good read.
Couldn't have said that better myself.. Although I think the PS2 was popular mainly because of the PS1's success and could not be denied.. Didn't think it was totally innovative aside from the DVD feature.. Still a great console in its own right though..

Maybe dying was the wrong choice to use, but struggling is what the PSP has been doing since it was released: "But I have to question the rationale of having another PSP when Nintendo, especially with the 3DS is going to so dominate that market that are you just throwing good money after bad? And as we just said, when the PlayStation Network could use such a revitalization, is it better to invest there than in what really seems to be a losing race with Nintendo." -Adam Sessler (love or hate him lol)

Totally agree. The PS2 didn't have anything other than the brand name and the DVD player. It was even a pain to program for it. Actually if GTA3 hadn't happened I wonder how well the console would have sold, because every game that defined the PS1 (Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy) was either crap, late, or absent from the PS2's library. Then GTA3 came along....Sony own Rockstar their weight in gold

I was about to post the article ZeroAX linked.

Most of Sony's success belonged to Sony. I'd say that what they did best was to assure a way to distribute games efficiently, something that was very difficult in other times, but Sony's music division made it possible.

Also, it made games mainstream. Maybe that's why the original PlayStation doesn't have a lot of nostalgia attached to it (although it is my favorite console), but it was something that helped gamers overall.

Pushing games in Europe didn't hurt either.

For many Europeans it is looked at with a lot of nostalgia. The original PlayStation, is to Europe, what the NES is to the USA. The first console that truly became mainstream.

If only they had listened to Phil Harrison telling them that casual gaming is the future, and that the biggest sellers in Europe are the EyeToy and Singstar.

I have to say that all things considered, the PSP HAS been successful. Sure Big N dominates the market, and has done so for more than 20 years, but name me ONE other portable that has success that even comes close to that the PSP has had. I have to believe that it is still profitable for Sony and thus worth pushing forward with a successor to the PSP, or all the strides that the PSP has made would be for naught as they basically waive the white flag to Big N.
NES | SNES | Genesis | PSOne | Saturn | N64 | Dreamcast | Gamecube | XBox | PS2 Phat w/HDLoader | PS3 Slim| Wii
GBA SP | PSP-1000 | WiFi-iPad 16GB(Is this a game system?) | Modded PS1 | PS Vita 3G
