wow thats very interesting, street fighter is the most simple game to pick up and play but hard to master, and its very fun. I own and played pretty much every streetfighter games out there and the mechanics still same with just few change. BUt street fighter alpha 3 is by far the smoothest, easiet, and fun to combo street fighter game in my oppinion.

3rd strike wasnt bad either just didnt liek the music and the new weird characters.

Street fighter 4 just way different than the 2d , just odnt feel the same and moves just act very different.

forgot to add, play with a friend or someone who can teach u then itll be more fun and youl pick it up faster. Or just look at the move lists and learn the moves, only 3 or 4 for each characters so its not that bad.

I like to think of street fighter as one of the earser ones to get into, but possible the hardest to master. Your comment on blocking to single hit damage is a beginning step. A big factor in street fighter is capitalizing on your opponents mistake. For example, if you look up professional tournament play, you will see them play a lot of a style called "footsie". This is a guage on your spacing to your opponent, and if you get it right you can unleash fucking hell. A HUGE thing to work on is combo/ariel/guard breaks. Try to use light strikes in variations against heavy attacks. You will notice that you break the combo and turn the tide of the match in a second. Another rewarding tactic is cancelling in the corner by attacking your opponent from above and landing behind them to finish your combo. Its not easy but they miss the block because they are forced to change directions. Anyway, I hope you give it another chance sometime :)

One thing I love about street fighter is how the skills you build in one translate so well to the rest of the series - it's only the gimmicks and unique moves that you need to re-learn.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

thats a valid thing to point out, such as the parry system in 3rd strike

Ironic you should mention that. I have played the Street Fighter Anniversary version of 3rd Strike for years now. Just got Street Fighter III: Double Impact in the mail today - can't wait to 'unlearn' all the 3rd Strike skills to play New Generation and Second Impact.

I still need to get that one of these days. I've yet to find a satisfactory portable version of SFII. That would probably be my best bet.
