At a real, quality college yes, but you can get a job at a tech school on less than a Master's. But you won't be making "800,000" either...
No were close to 800,000 I would think unless have a PhD or something and do some serious research. Quite a few of the professors I've had worked more then one job. Either teaching at more then one school or something else completely. One of my English professors has a law practice on the side.
"the more you are viewed as a "crucial asset" or an "authority" on a subjects the more money you will make and the less work you will have to do. "

As I said, it depends on those factors. Naturally doing research makes you a much more crucial asset, the more research you do the more you are views as an authority on the topic you research. Also, if your English professor has a law practice on the side that means he is an adjunct and not seriously pursuing his teaching. Law professors generally make about 200,000 a year, that doesn't include books, speaking or consulting. Some law department heads ( St. John's Law School ) earn over 400,000 a year. If you are in the creative writing department and you write a best seller, or if you are in the English department and you are a well known literature critic, ect .ect.. all increases your pay because you increase the visibility of the university.

See if the "department head" at your college or any faculty members with tenure will tell you how much they make, you would be pleasantly surprised. This is especially true at a larger colleges, private colleges or ivy league colleges.

It depends entirely on how you define lazy. If I get to do what ever I want to do all day and get paid for it, I view that as borderline gluttony. I love reading opinions on literature, I love editing papers, I love reading poems and short stories and I love giving my opinions on them. So, to me, I get to be very very lazy. The best part is I get to shoot the bull with a bunch of 20yr olds for about 5 - 8 hours a day 3 days a week, and I get paid for it! So.. Just depends on how you see things.

Here is a list of professors and their incomes to give you an idea of what the playing feild looks like.

Very true! However once you have a BA degree people are very willing to give you larger grants, the government gives more money, and student loan lenders will give you loans with out a co-signer or even good credit. The key to getting a PhD or Masters degree is to know the department you want to go into at which school and start working the systems in place.
