Re: best sports games for nes?
Baseball Stars was pretty good on the NES, but I really prefer the Neo Geo Pocket version [not so much the sequel on the Neo Geo Pocket Color; I actually prefer the Black and White version].

I also enjoyed Golf. Crude and difficult, but still enjoyable.
That's all I can think of that's not obvious (Punch Out!).
Super Dodge ball is straight up awesome! I also remember liking T&C Surf Designs as well. Also you can't go wrong with Dunk Hunt!! And do yourself a favor get a Genesis and play some Mutant League Football and Hockey please.

THIS.
For the record, Super Spike V'Ball is incredibly fun, as is the Kunio-kun soccer game (I forget the English name). Also, Tecmo World Wrestling is simply wonderful.

Re: best sports games for nes?
I feel like I've seen a few topics regarding NES sports games in the past and I don't believe I've heard any mention of my personal favorite: Little League Baseball

Perhaps it's that I didn't play all the others that much, but I think I was just drawn to this one because I was in little league as a kid when I had it and it was just crazy good. I had 3 brothers and we would play small tourneys all the time against each other. My team of choice was New York and I can still remember most of my players on that team even though I haven't played it in several years. I hope dearly that anyone who has not played this game before gives it a chance if they can with a 2nd player (as always you can go solo and that's fun too but it shines as a 2 player game). It is very unique in my opinion and has some of the best controls for a baseball game on the NES. I mean check this out: You can pitch a fastball by holding down when you throw it and it will make a fast sound giving the 2nd player the impression that it's coming fast, ok? BUT if you hold up right after that ball leaves your hand you can instantly slow that ball down to a crawl and the 2nd player swings well before that pitch reaches the plate. This trick is one of the funnest to pull off and my brothers hated me when I did it. There's so much more to discuss... I need to find some people that know this game.

The only ones I ever play are Duck Hunt, Super Dodge Ball, Slalom, and Base Wars. I'm just not a big sports fan, I guess.
