sweet, I'll try ubuntu most likely. Would the compaq I posted be a pretty decent buy? I'm not trying to run out and buy all new games. I'd just like to play what I have, I'm a casual computer gamer.

The compaq atleast has an ATI graphics processor, despite the fact that it's onboard. The ATI 4200 is better then the Intel Media thingy 4500, correct? Those seems to be the two most prevelent graphics processors in affordable laptops.

I'm not up to speed on mobile graphics chips, but it's always been the case before that any ATI or NVidia is going to blow the intel stuff out of the water.

Ha... Compaq. Avoid those, cheapest Laptop I've ever used.

I would also avoid dell. This dell laptop I am on right now has major problems, lets list them.

Dvd drive doesn't work.

Hard drive failed multiple times

Memory is completely gone (For instance, right now I am typing this in safe mode +networking)

And it constantly overheats when playing games... Like diablo 2.

I got an Acer melt down on me but that doesn't entitle me to generalise about Acer products (though it does give me the right to lambast that particular model).

I'd recommend ASUS laptops. Also, for GPUs this site is indispensable http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Gra ... 844.0.html

HP is a solid brand. Have had no problems with my Pavillion yet (knock on wood). It runs emulation well, and I can play TF2 on it with no problems.

With the discussion of Linux, I have no problem with it, but I felt Ubuntu wasn't for me when I installed. My friend is a Linuxholic though, and has like 8 distros going on his computer at once, trying to find his "perfect" system.

Eventually he'll just settle on Debian. It's the universal operating system. It can be anything you want it to be. From the prettiest, clickiest kiosk, to a slim, fast keyboard driven workstation, to a headless server.

If it helps, Guild Wars is definitely playable through wine. I used to play it all the time using Crossover Mac (it's basically a front end for DarWINE) on my Macbook Pro back when I was really into the game shortly after Nightfall came out. It was playable then, it will definitely be much better now.
