I just left the Evolution tournament floor. There were about 2000 entrants in Super Street Fighter 4 alone, almost double last year. The game is suited for both competitive players and new players alike. Yeah there are very complicated systems in the game for the hardcore. At the same time the graphics and appeal of the simpler gameplay drew many people back to fighting games.
Street Fighter 3 T.S. was an amazing game. Problem was it was built for people like me, and not everyone. It kind of turned off an entire generation of players from 99 until something like 2008. My point is developers are in business, and making money comes first. If they can coax people into playing a specific genre by creating a few games that satisfies a large audience so be it.
BTW I went 2-2 in pools. Competition was fierce this year, no flowchart players and no scrubs to be seen. To get out of pools into the 32 player semifinals took 8 wins. There were about 115 people in each pool. Completely nuts.
