2010: Year of the Return of the Sidescroller?

Kirby Epic Yarn sounds like delicious. I may pick up knitting just for this game guys.

I don't know why.

Seriously though, I couldn't be happier about the amount of sidescrollers. I am getting tired of other people elsewhere around the internet complaining that its all a "nostalgia grab". I hate it when traditional gameplay is brushed off like that. Especially when it looks as good as most of these games.

Developers are realizing that the old genres are still fun, and making a good sidescroller is much cheaper than the latest FPS/TPS. This console generation has inflated budgets so high that studios now have to consider whether the amount of money they sink into a game can be recouped through sales or not. And so they're looking to the past to see how they can make an enjoyable title that people will buy and will net profit. This, of course, is a win for us.

I've never been so interested in up and coming games as I am now. Especially that Donkey Kong game. Why-oh-why has it taken developers this long to get back to the holy side-scroller?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I am also very excited about many of these series returning to their roots. I have been desperately wishing for the last year or so that Nintendo would release a new game in the Donkey Kong Country series because every time I hear the music (downloaded the official sound tracks for the games) I feel compelled to play these gems again... and look what happens! I couldn't be more happy for this game and these other greats that are coming this year or in 2011; Scott Pilgrim looks like a good contender btw :D

I have been desperately wishing for the last year or so that Nintendo would release a NEW GAME full stop tbh...

And not only nintendo. Is anyone else tired of the same game with different iterations?

But it's going on 14 years since the last sidescrolling DKC was released in '96... DKC 64 was 3D and Jungle Beat wasn't in the Country series and doesn't have the same feel. While I do agree that it would be nice if the Big N came out with some new IPs and material; I can't help but be excited for the return of DKC after so long... great memories and the gameplay still holds up on these today.

I'm actually excited!

Most (all?) of these look gorgeous, and they look like they will play really nice (which is really what matters for me). I hope they do play really nice.
With that many coming out I think it is unlikely there won't be at least one great game among them (I hope they are all great, of course).

Ivo.
