Yes two gyroscopes. And dont wuss out and play gyromite with the two controllers. That is a cowards way out - and makes the game really easy.

If I ever do get a NES setup, promise not to cheat. More interested in novelty of Rob working that second controller. Not very optimistic on the Toaster NES do to eventual fail of pins. Maybe get a good S-Video aftermarket Dual NES SNES toploader at some point.
Might even mod the little guy to be dual purpose. Gyromite on NES and an inconspicuous mod; NES controller to move Rob directly like the Armatron. A two player Battle Stacking Robots! Radioshack Armatron might have the edge, more flexibility.
EDIT
Okay, overnight soaking of rotted batteries WD40 worked! Man I love that stuff, great for lubricating hinges, locks, oiling up Engine compartment of '62 ....... Anyways, moved AA batteries around with screwdriver in finger hole and then "please don't break" forcibly slid the battery door using slot screwdriver as a finger. All the white powder looked like wet salt buildup like an ocean buoy. Batteries coated like a 20 year old Auto Diehard. Wiped off easily since it was wet with that WD40. Surprisingly, the battery contacts and in fact the entire compartment looked new. Contacts still have chrome shiny coating. Robbed AA batteries from two remotes and Rob did the test dance just fine. Circled left then back to middle, arms opened and went all the way up. Popped a D battery in the Gyro motor, thought a fail till I dropped the gyroscope in, spun up very fast. I can see why these get lost, a cool kids toy.
Very happy everything working beautiful in this obvious seldom used Rob. No scratches anywhere at all! The scratch on the gyro turns out to be an air bubble, clear packing saran wrap sticker still stuck to the red anodize paint! Just need another gyro, NES (maybe good non-toaster version) and the two game carts Gyromite and Duck Hunt. Maybe one day get lucky and come across the Stack Up Game set.
Does anyone know which of all the Top Loader NES work with R.O.B.?
The ones that do have the NES controller ports that is.

Re: R.O.B replacement parts
My OCD in me. Just bought the missing Gyro with extra rails on EBay. 23 bucks shipped, not a bad price?
EDIT
Just received other Gyro along with extra set of rails. As expected gyro had little wear on the red anodized paint, but works beautiful. A nice bonus is the two additional rails with pads. If I do end up doing a Mod Rob, I can also have the little robot operate two sets controller fire buttons now. Little WD40 in all moving parts, most notably the Gyros where Rob grabs the top, lotta friction in there!
Idea setup is keep original function intact and hooking up perhaps a 3rd NES controller thru inconspicuous battery door hole. Original 5 pin connector probably wouldn't work anyways. Separate contact points for each operation to contend with.
Plan is:
ARM UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT - Direction Pad
ARM OPEN, CLOSE - Fire Buttons
Maybe the Select and Start buttons for power to Rob and Gyro motor. Have to be converted from momentary contact to on-off mode. Or I could use those to light up Robs L.E.D and Eyes.
Is this is worthy of a bacteria mod?
Exactly like this setup. Except make left and right correct.

Re: R.O.B replacement parts
Forgot to mention picked up a NES toaster, making this kit complete.
In honor of NES birthday, attempting to do a direct control R.O.B mod with a NES controller. So far looks like a reverse of polarity to change the direction of the arms.
Three motors.
1. Up and Down
2. Rotate Left and Right.
3. Open and Close Arms.
Two of the motors are behind the arms, a pain to put back together. Glad I pulled that arm cover with R.O.B. upside down.
Tricky, half the switches would have to be positive, other half negative. A work around is using Diodes, looks like there are some resistors attached on each motor terminal. The biggest downfall is isolating the individual PCB traces in the base of the robot. A decision if I should "cut the cord" on R.O.B.'s original function of using the sensor screen flash in Gyromite?
Maybe if I do this, will see if the Armitron dexterity will beat R.O.B.'s speed.
EDIT
My MOD R.O.B. didn't work out. I was trying to line up diodes to allow the reversible motors of the NES robot to work directly with a NES controller. No luck, "smokem if you got them." Looks like I'll have to go with a two pole 3 position momentary toggle switch. Have to isolate both positive and negative to reverse the direction. Three Momentary ON-OFF-ON switches needed. I would have loved to use a NES original controller. Only single pole contacts under the NES buttons. There is that video clip on Youtube, probably used relays which would be expensive for this little hobby mod. Don't worry R.O.B., I haven't given up, may just go with the toggles.
EDIT 2
Got ROB to work as a direct control Robot!
