Apart from final fantasy and gta 1 & 2 the rest don't hold up to time imo. Gran turismo was revolutionary at its time (i played the heck out of them) but compared to today's racing games it feels very outdated and surpassed

Don't collect, unless you are a collector.
i bought more games than I can play, and a lot of them are sitting collecting dust
I am not talking about 100 games

like just 20, buy as you go unless you see a really good offer
or
the ones that are rare and you feel like this is a rare chance to get it
or
a personal favorite that you really really want to own a copy of

don't be scared, emulation never lets you down

I am looking for titles that are RPGs, Fighters, Shmups, and platformers. I'm looking for games that hen the word ps1 or ps2 is brought up some people immediately think of those titles. Are final fantasy origins, chronicles, or anthology worth owning?

Most PS1 titles don't hold up well, and I imagine given enough time the PS2 will start to look antiquated as well. The PS1 looked old hat to me back in 1999, and eleven years later I can't say much for the system.. Of course occasionally I look up the PS1 port of a certain game because I can't be bothered to install Win98 to play said game.

Origins, sure, assuming you haven't already played the GBA or PSP versions of 1 and 2.

Chronicles has in my opinion the definitive US version of Final Fantasy IV in its purest form. Much better translation than the original FFIIus release, and it has all the difficulty of the japanese original intact. On top of that, it has absolutely none of the loading issues that plague the other half of this release and the Anthology release.

Anthology is a maybe, it depends on how much you want to play Final Fantasy V. There are some loading issues that aren't a HUGE problem, but can get a bit on your nerves if you're impatient.

Either way, though, DON'T buy them for Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI (aka IIIus), they're identical to the SNES versions of each, except they both feature quite a bit of loading. I suppose they're playable if you have no way of playing the SNES originals (or if the SNES originals are priced out-of-reach for you), but don't go in expecting stellar ports of these two.

I doubt this is really any kind of issue, I'm sure the OP understands that with a 4th gen console he's going to get long load times and old, blocky 3D.
