tbh I had never actually owned a console untill approximately 3 years ago, my experiences with them before were all from playing them in people I knew's houses.

When I was younger I had the type of parents who would only get something which could play games and 'ecudate' - so I got a C128 lol

using the SPRDEF function was about as far as I got 'educationally' lol, and typing in 'poke' cheats
mostly I played Mercenary, Ecnounter, Uridium, Paradroid and ACE (using my beautiful 1571 5.25 floppy drive :p).
then when the Amiga came into the forefront, I never actually got round to getting one, although I always liked em a lot

eventually I got a PC in about 1994 - a Pentium (yes standard Pentium) 90mhz with I think 16MB of RAM (which was a big deal at the time). I think the gfx chipset was a S3 Virge or something - Im not sure - but it was just to optimise SVGA output or something, this computing behemoth also sported a CD-ROM drive. At first I wasnt that into the games on the thing, apart from DooM, and flight sims like Aces over Europe. Then I got my hands on Wing Commander III, and then I fell in love eheh. It's hard to explain how amazing those graphics looked at the time. I wore out tonnes of crappy sound card/serial port based analogue joysticks playing that one :).
I love all the Wing Commander games - although I do think that Prophecy didnt quite have the same epic feel, and the enemies were in a word - crap. So far it looks like 'Wing Commander: Arena' for XboX Live on the 360 is going to be utter, utter dross, and an insult to Chris Roberts heritage :s. Strike Commander was another game I enjoyed playing a lot, even though it was extremely arcadey, the fact that it had a YF-23 in it was brilliant :p.

Quake was another game which I really enjoyed (as I have every id software game). When that first came out I played it with a joystick lol - using the POV hat for strafe and jump :o. I eventually forced myself to use mouse and keys though. Although I do think that the Wii does have the potential to be the best control system for an FPS being played on a console. I still think it will never be as precise as mouse/keyboard (although it may be more fun). I can never see someone for example rocket jumping turning 270 degrees and switching to rail and hitting someone in the head before even landing on a console, unless it uses a mouse and keyboard. Having said that most players nowadays seem to prefer 'realism' in FPS's - so maybe most ppl dont give a crap lol.

Quake3 was another game I spent a lot of time playing from the early q3test days. it was my first online game, and i played it every night pretty much for 2 years :p.

anywayz enough rambling, Im going to end my PC rant with a list of the PC games I love/remember, and most of which I still play:

F-22 ADF/TAW

Wing Commander (entire series)

Freelancer

Falcon 4.0

ComancheCD (I love hyperVoxels)

Delta Force 1 + 2 (so i was annoyed when they started using standard polygonal graphics for Land Warrior)

Quake (entire series) (Quakeworld, Rocket Arena 1 and 3, CPMA)

Wolf3d and RTCW

Deus Ex

Tribes 2

Battlefield 1942

Dark Forces/Jedi Knight/Jedi Outcast

Duke Nukem 3D

Rise Of The Triad

Il-2

US Navy Fighters

Half-Life (both)

Descent

yes, some of those games have come out on consoles, but in every case I believe the PC version is superior

I am just starting to get my feet wet in PC gaming. Up until now, I've always been a console guy. Either I did not have the hardware for good PC gaming, or I just wasn't interested in the games.

There is one thing that steers me away from it every single time. The fact that you have to sit at your desk to play. Coming from a console gamer, this just feels awkward and wrong. I do work at my desk. When I want to play games, I like to relax on a couch or beanbag. Unless someone can point me to a *very* comfortable office chair, I don't know if I'll ever become a true PC gamer. It's the exact same problem when trying to watch videos or movies on my PC. Just doesn't really feel right.

That being said. I have now started venturing to the realm of PC games to see what all the fuss is about. My first purchase ever was the Orange Box. Half Life 2: episode 2 was the first FPS game I've ever completed!! I had a good time with it. My computer isn't terrible (GeForce 6800XT 256MB, P4 3.2E Prescott, 4 GB Ram) so the experience has been positive. I have just picked up BioShock, but haven't opened it yet (work is very busy lately).

So we'll see. It's a new journey and I hope to overcome my anti-PC gaming stigmas. So far it's looking great!

Whats funny is I am a decent pc gamer, in terms of fan not skill (well not always), and your pc is far better than my own. Granted I always play at 800x600 if I can, with lowest everything - old UT habit.

AvP Gold will always be one of my favorite lanparty games. But my favorites growing up were all of the SCUMM and Serria adventures
Battle for Britain
Falcon 3.0
The Super Solvers (namely Gizmos and Gadgets, Treasure Mountain, and the Midnight one in the Highschool with robots)
The iconic Oregon Trail
Dr Livingston I Presume
Ali-Baba (damn random 128x128 maps every time)
Space Eggs
Daggerfall - probably the most recent on this list
Darklands
X-Wing/B-Wing
and the one game I love but really suck at, Lode Runner.

Ive done the runs of the FPS's, from STALKER to Daikatana, and the TBS/RTS, Civ2 and the Red Alert Series being my favorites, but I still feel that no matter what the PC is the best place for real adventure games. Fate of Atlantis, Kings Quest, Zork, there are really no bad eggs in that bunch.

does anyone know of any other forums that have a heavier focus on 1990s-ish PC gaming?

No. I mean I rarely like a FPS on a console. I prefer them on the PC for the exact reason you gave. Sorry if I was confusing. :)
Lol, that makes sense then. Honestly, with the exception of Time Splitters or Metroid Prime (somewhat), I'd have to agree entirely. I think once the wii's developers get their asses in gear and make a great FPS (I think Medal of Honor: Vanguard may be the first), then this position for quite a few people could change. Let's just hope. :D
I'm the exact opposite. I'd much more prefer to play an FPS game on the Xbox/360 than the PC. The controller feels more conducive for movement as opposed to WASD, and getting acquainted with the right analog stick is not that hard. People always make it sound like it's tough to aim with a controller, but it feels fine to me and I can make headshots in a lot of games with ease. Also, using the triggers on a controller is a lot more fun when it comes to FPS games for me. It feels more interactive than just clicking on your target. I know I'm in the minority with this, but the whole "mouse/keyboard > controller" just seems blown out of proportion.
