 Yeah, you'll love it when simple static electricity, small fluctuations in power, literally just using your computer and more can wipe all of your data in a fraction of a second.

Stick with a normal motorized platter HDD and even if the drive breaks or has the motor wear out the platter inside can be removed by a service company and have all of it's data recovered. SSD's are for people who don't plan on actually keeping important or large amounts of data on their comps. When you've got files that are almost 11 years old on your comp like me having an HDD that won't nuke itself randomly is important.

Also always go WD, their HDD's run cool and I've never had one break down. Seagate and Samsung have also been good to me too, but WD's have always been my real workhorses that took every kind of punishment and abuse yet kept right on working.

What about buying 2 of the same drives and putting one in an external enclosure? Is there any sort of technical wizardry required beyond plugging the drive into the enclosure then plugging the enclosure into the usb port?

All I can say is that whatever you do, don't get a Fantom Drive brand hard drive; they're slow, noisy, and both of mine broke after only 2 years of infrequent use as external drives. Needless to say, they suck. But, I've had a Western Digital 500 GB drive running in my Xbox for a while now with absolutely no issues.

I would recommend either Seagate or Western Digital. I have 3 external WD drives (500 GB, 1TB, and 300GB) and have had no issues with any of them. I usually have them running pretty often. :)

Yeah, I absolutely hated the Fantom I had in an old PC once; three Weeks and it nuked itself along with all the data I had on it. Thankfully I didn't have anything other than the OS and a few MP3's at the time.

Ok, never heard of Fantom drives. I was referring to big names in general. WD, Seagate, Samsung, Toshiba, etc.

I think I'm going to have to stop actually reading reviews and just start going by the star ratings. Pretty much every device I've read a review of has at least a handful of people slamming it. I think I'll be picking up 2 western digital caviar blacks and a rosewill enclosure.

I've had nothing but trouble with Western Digital desktop drives however their "Advance Replacement" makes the RMA process quick.

Their notebook HDDs are great tho. Never had an issue. I find it interesting that their desktop drives (that remain stationary) crap out when their notebook drives don't seem to even though they get moved around frequently. Must have something to do with the form factor and the sudden motion sensor.

Even though there is a price premium for 2.5" HDDs that is the only type I would buy. Quieter, low power, just as fast as desktop drives. In an enclosure they only need power over the USB connector to spin up. Downside? Short warranties.

Too late bought a caviar black today :) I'm holding off on the second one for now. I've got enough space on my 500gb to back things up for a little while yet.
