it would be great if everyone would back up his opinion with a picture to show his favorite kind of graphics.

as I mentioned I also like 2000-dreamcast graphics, where you get 3D but its retarded in away, too plain, but this post is for your favorite graphics only.

8-Bit NES and SMS. The limitations forced the game designers to be far more creative than they would have been otherwise. Look at todays games, even the 2D ones. They can literally design anything they want...but it all comes out looking bland and forgettable.

I'm actually really surprised at the variety of replies. For some reason I expected to see just a flood of "16-bit era" posts.

As for me? I don't think I have a favorite. Graphics were never that important to me, and I've always valued good art direction over graphical quality, no matter what the era.

I'm nostalgic for the N64-level 3D, especially how the faces often looked stickered on to the sprites. Late 16-bit is always nice, and for some reason I like the 128-bit graphics better than current HD.

I have to chime in and point out that there has never been a "128-bit" console.

XXX-bit was a marketing term to identify a single generation of console technology, mainly going by the addressing size of the CPU. But by sixth generation things got quite confusing so they just dropped the whole thing, and people just consider it a legacy term nowadays, or whatever it's called.

The SH-4 in the Dreamcast was 32-bit. Even the Emotion Engine was not 128-bit "Contrary to popular belief, the Emotion Engine is not a 128-bit processor as it does not process a single 128-bit value, but a group of four 32-bit values that are stored in one 128-bit register."

I pretty much stopped gaming altogether after the first playstation. I had the Nintendo 64 for a while, then traded it for a Playstation (again) and later just traded that for my first guitar. I loved gaming but I just loved music more. I got a PS2 later on when it dropped in price but I couldn't afford any games. So I ended up just owning GTA 3 and San Andreas but mostly using it to play DVDs...

But I'm back now! Daddy's home and he's gonna play some games! ;D

That probably doesn't excuse my lack of knowledge but it explains it!

You're welcome! It's a common mistake among people interested in games. In fact I always thought the Dreamcast and PS2 were 128-bit until I read up a bit on both.

So what's your main interest in gaming that brought you back? The new blockbuster games with their pretty graphics, or nostalgia for the old school days?

For me it would have to be the SNES/Genesis era graphics. Bold and colorful and detailed enough to be beautiful. Why are so most games these days brown/grey?

It was nostalgia.

I'be been playing on my friend's 360s and realized that I love playing games and should get a console of my own but non of the current gen really suits me. The games are a little too complicated for me. But I do have an iPod touch stuffed with games, mostly zombiegames and I traded a netbook for a DS with a couple of games. So I've been more of a casual gamer for the last few years.

But then my younger brother sent me a link to Nathans Neo Geo music video. I laughed for hours and then checked out his other videos and as I sat there, listening to him talking about the Genesis I remembered; I LOVE THE GENESIS! So I got my old Master System and Atari 2600 from the closet, plugged them in and played. Then I got on eBay and bought myself my old childhood friend!

But I suck at playing games, I rarely get past the first few levels. The only one's that I've been truly good at was Half-life Deathmatch and counterstrike. Got tired of those and stopped playing them when I switched to the Mac! So right now I'm stocking up on games for the Genesis, playing Castlevania on the DS and just enjoying myself, regardless of how terrible I am at it! I just love it.

I'll probably get a current gen console soon enough but as of now, the Genesis, iPod and DS are more than enough!
