Get a MBP from 2006ish. It will cost the same if not less, and wipe the floor with it in every single possible way.

My two cents, stay the hell away from Vaios. My fiance bought one for her birthday a couple years back, worst laptop I've used by far. Driver support is terrible, screen is starting to flicker when adjusting the laptop screen, and the heatsink fan finally died on me ($40 to replace the fan, or $299+ for a new laptop? hmm...)

In my opinion, as much as I hate to eat my own words, HP is pretty dang decent laptops nowadays. I use to hate them because they felt like a Playschool toy with their cheap feeling plastic, but if you can over look that, they build a nice product.

Try this out: goto http://bing.com, and search for 'HP laptop', click the FIRST result you see on the page (should be an ad or something marked 'bing cashback'). If you buy a laptop from HP using this link, you get 25% off your purchase. So a laptop of that Vaio's caliber is now $600.

Your move. :)

Doesn't seem very good for video editing. Vaios are kinda stinky too, I've had tons of trouble with them.
Thanks everyone...

well....I THOUGHT i knew what i wanted.....this is some good stuff to hear...so bottom line..I know little about anything...i thought the viao would be cool because everything else i own is sony like my tv and stuff.....and the blu-ray drive.

So if I get a desktop would it be cheaper/better for what I want to do...naturally editing and film stuff is my priority, gaming is a want....and like you said if i save enough money i could get a cheap laptop for notes etc....I need help :(

I'm going to recommend a Macbook Pro. I know, you're thinking about getting a "pc" but you can install Windows on the Mac if you really need it. But most of the stuff people need is available on the Mac as well.

The main reason is that you have Final cut on the Mac wich people seem to prefer over Adobe's similar suite. I haven't had that much experience myself but I'm being told that FC is the better choice of the two. The second reason for my opinion is the overall quality of the hardware, aluminum casing, 10 hour battery etc.
I use to have a laptop from DELL for school, but the plastic casing couldn't handle all of that wear and tare and with a batterylife of 3 - 4 hours it wasn't very portable either.

As far as gaming goes, Steam just got released on the Mac! :)

As I said earlier, Boot Camp will allow you to "dual boot" the Mac OS with Windows. When you start up your computer, you'll have the choice which operating system you want to boot into. If you get use to the Mac OS, you can uninstall Windows. Or keep both on there for those non-Mac programs/games. The only important thing worth noting here is that you'll have to buy a copy of Windows to do this. I mean, you could run a cracked version if you REALLY want to.

Dell's quality fell to complete shit for a while. I think they're starting to clean up their act, but I probably wont buy Dell any time soon. Such a shame, they use to have much better quality products. The help give PCs a bad name.

He could also use Parallels Desktop or something similar to run Mac OS and Windows at the same time, although that would probably be too demanding if he's doing heavy duty work.

I did get a new Dell (desktop) a few years back, it didn't suck. But there was a few weird glitches but those went away when I replaced Windows with Ubuntu. But I think it's safe to buy Dell again. So that's my recommendation if he doesn't want a Mac.

Yeah, one could run Windows in a virtual machine. But you're right, it might not be a good idea to be running something heavy in Windows running on top of Mac. But really, if some one is relying that much on Windows, then just don't get a Mac.

Dell cleaned up their act about five years ago. Dell Small Business has insane sales every once and a while.
