For platformers you can't go wrong with New Super Mario Bros. Wii and the Megaman games on Wiiware. Final Fantasy IV After Years on Wiiware is also a great RPG, though I'm not sure if it'll be to your GF's tastes; it's not cutesy, but it does use FF6-level graphics.

yeah it's a great game, I disagree as a fit for her, though. that game is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Seriously, girls tend to like puzzle games (also, run 'n guns and beat 'em ups, but I digress). As mentioned, you could try and give her A Boy and His Blob; Zack & Wiki might be a good idea too, as is World of Goo. Mario games are a sure bet (Galaxy, Bros., Kart), and she'll probably love Klonoa as well.

You're in luck. There's a lot of gaming to be had for £40 on Wii.

Little King's Story can be had for around a fiver.
Boom Blox 1 and 2 can be had for under £10 for both of em.
Mario Galaxy £10-15 (this is great because you can take turns in controlling mario and helping with a spare remote stopping enemies/obstacles and collecting bits)
Mario Kart £10 (you don't need the pointless wheel it comes with, just get it second hand)
Just Dance is great fun, if a little shallow. Best of all it's very cheap.
Zelda is a must for anyone
Samba De Amigo is great, if a little buggy, once you get used to how it works.
Mario and Sonic at the olympics is pretty good. As is winter olympics. The curling is especially great.

Avoid that EA Sing game. It's crap. The game doesn't work on a fundamental level, I passed a song 100% by blowing at the mic. Singstar it is not. In fact I'd go to say, if Singstar was a real person, it would despise being in the same category as such shit like Lips or Sing. Lips is just as bad as Sing, I can win songs by rubbing the mic on my jeans. Ridiculous.

Give her Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon and learn empathy for any woman you have ever been with that complained you paid more attention to your games than to her.

These are all great suggestions and I appreciate your input. Cheers! I'll probably be going to town Friday. I'll let you guys know what I decide on.

Heh, today I had to ask a guy Gamestation what the wii-chuck thing is. He talked to me like I was a total fr00b. I was slightly embarrassed... I'm still amazed at the amount of Wii peripherals there are; scarily amazed...

The Trauma Center games. Playing the sequel with my girlfriend was probably the most fun I've had with the Wii.

Also, Raving Rabbids.
