Re: Which System is the Last One to be Considered "Classic"?
If I go by the web definition: authoritative:
of recognized authority or excellence
a creation of the highest excellence.
It seems almost all major systems apply. I personally view the Atari 2600 Gameboy and NES as classics, maybe even SNES and Genesis.
Now "retro" is another matter, in the world of electronics anything that isn't currently mass supported I view as retro which would include the Xbox and Gamecube. Age really doesn't matter when calling something retro. If its not popular anymore its retro. If they started mass making NES games and start making the system again and it sells well enough to call popular do you consider it retro still?

Re: Which System is the Last One to be Considered "Classic"?
I consider the N64, Playstation (PS1), and Sega Saturn as my cut-off systems for "classic" at the moment. They all came out between 1995-1996 and were the direct competition; also the graphics lend to being more "classic" since the 3d/polygon era was beginning (blocky and bad draw distance)
The Dreamcast graphics are leaps and bounds above these consoles (and somewhat on-part with some PS2 and Gamecube games still) so I don't consider it a classic yet. I think for me the system has to be 2 generations old to be considered classic; one generation old is well... just old
After the XBox 360, Wii, and PS3 are retired then I will add Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, and PS2 onto the classic list.

I'm not sure if I'd consider the PS1 or Dreamcast classic systems just yet. N64 is for sure but PS1 and Dreamcast are right on the borderline for me.

The NES was truly classic and not the SNES.

You're saying the SNES is not classic? Pffff. IMO, it's the greatest system of all time.benderx wrote:The NES was truly classic and not the SNES.

Re: Which System is the Last One to be Considered "Classic"?
I'm pretty generous when it comes to considering systems "classic". In my opinion, once a system has absolutley no support, and it's games are not sold at modern videogame retailers like Gamestop, it becomes classic. So in other words, Xbox became classic as of April 15th, 2010. Gamecube is not classic yet, nor is PS2. PS1 and N64 are classic, along with Dreamcast. PC games become classic once they're about 8 to 10 years old. snes>genesis

I think PS1/Saturn/N64 would be the last that I would consider classic. Maybe Dreamcast too, but it's still in the "128 bit" generation with XBOX/GCN/PS2.
