I think I had that same PC Gamer disk. It also got me hooked on Star Control 2 and X-COM.
Did they make a recent follow-up to this? X-Com and Descent, but no Star Control II on the one I have...

I'm stoked for this! I had the PC shareware version (first couple of stages only) and loved it - didn't get the full version only because I was like 12 years old and couldn't afford it. Finally I'll get to play the whole thing! I'd be happy with a straight port with updated wii controls. Hope they don't mess with it too much.

Looking over that list, it looks like that IS the disk I had. I guess Star Control 2 must have come on a different PC Gamer disk.

Ive been part of dedicated communities - in its heyday my Team Fortress Classic map folder was 2 gigs of constantly played maps (it got to 4 gigs by the end but that was just to show off). But that is nothing compared to the Descent fans. They still have international tournaments and monthly map pack releases for all three titles. Descent 1 came out in 1995 and a map pack was released for it last month.
Hell ,Yes. It's amazing, it's probably one of the most hard-working communities in the world of videogames.

I have not played Descent but I really want to.

Think of Quake with strafing in all directions, fly in a multiple direction tunnel, don't worry about being upside down, doesn't matter. To hold you over, there is also Descent 3 / Mercenary that will run on Windows PCs.

The ultimate is with PS1 Descent Max and PS1 Flightstick or Eagle Max, hard to come by but not impossible.
I don't have Steel Battalion
so this is a good alternative
in keeping "Flight Busy".

Ive found that out of all the control options. The one that seems to work the best for me is a flightstick and rudders. The good players can play with a flightstick that has a rudder swivel - I cant do that since it doesnt feel like a plane. But a using airplane controls makes Descent one of the neatest zerog dogfighting sims ever. I have played it with a Steel Battalion setup but it doesnt work nearly aswell as you would think.

I have played with ideas for building Descent/Mechwarrior pods. Little pcs, 32 inch LCDs, flightsticks, throttles, rudders, dials, lights, airvents, etc. But I have not drafted the idea out fully. That and arcade flightsticks are expensive as all get out.
