I mounted mine on some wood too. Topped it of with clear vinyl floor (not carpet) runner material. A wood frame keeps vinyl/DDR Pad from sliding.
that's an interesting idea. but i bought mine and looks like a metal pad until you lift it and see where the wood is exposed. it works nicely but im not sure how long it would last.
same here, unsure of durability but the solid backing does help. The clear vinyl is more protection against guests who don't take off their shoes. Because it is on a solid wood backing, no folding to break up inside flex-circuit. It does take up room, but stores behind the couch on its end fine.

If you're really serious, get a Cobalt Flux:

I had one for a while, but eventually I got good enough that I had to stick with the arcade.

Oof, I'm not that good, let alone too cheap to buy. Nice, looks like Arcade quality.

It's really good for that period from when you start doing 6's and 7's on Standard and for most of Expert. However, once you're regularly doing 9's on expert I find that it's just different enough from the arcade that it throws me off. Also, the pads aren't that good for Pump it Up, because Pump corners aren't squares; they're rectangles.

I imported a stack of pretty nice quality DDR dance pads from China about 4 years back. Good quality construction, steel outer. Very solid units.

I ended up paying about thee times their value to ship them due to the weight, but it was worth it. Sold a bunch of them at cost to friends who were all DDR nuts.

I probably won't do it again due to the lack of buyers here in AU, but I'm surprised you don't see more of the same units in the US.

What some of my friends back in middle school did was buy just a plain old soft pad. Then they would mod it, and basically make their own custom hardpads. They got wood, metal, paint, plastic (with their dads help), and basically just switched everything out. I tried one out and they worked realllllly goood and were custom. So that made it awesome. Most of their dads worked for Halliburton though, so they were naturally handy guys and could make stuff easily.

Plus a mod project might be fun if you have time.

And, more importantly, the middle square is way too big making it nearly unplayable. Since sooner or later you will want to try doubles investing in Cobalt Flux pads are not worth it, if you are so adicted to these kind of games you are better of going to the arcade, making one yourself or a mix of both (DDR DYI, PIU Arcade)

These are the pads I imported. I'm 6'3" with pretty big feet (AU Size 12), so that should give some perspective with my shoe in the second shot.
