ah, no worries about genre classifying... I really don't care, but in this instance I was using "shmup" to describe a game that looks and plays kinda like Darius.k.vlaros wrote:For what it's worth, Astro Boy Omega Factor is a great game, aside from genre. That said, the levels that stuck in my mind are definitely side-scrolling, flying, laser-shooting shoot'em'uppers.
But I know the memory an earlier faux paux when I called River City Ransom a 'fighter' is still fresh in memory.... I guess I've just never paid strict attention to video game taxonomy.

Re: good GB/GBA shmups?
Here's some more for GBA
Invader - vertical with good music and lots of upgrades. graphics are really bright.

Airforce delta storm - topdown all directions aerial dogfight with excellent graphics.

Ace Combat Advance - same as above, but different graphics

Pocky & Rocky with Becky - taito's zelda-control shinto priestess sorta-shmup.

There's some impressive homebrew Shmups for GBA if you're got a flashcart.
Uranus Series - Really impressive homebrew shmups. Uranus Zero is really hard.

BulletGBA - homebrew bullethell with no graphics really. emphasis on bullet patterns.

Vulkanon - another homebrew by the same guy - bullet hell type.

SuperWings - homebrew with a gameboy mono look. Good control and gameplay.

Re: good GB/GBA shmups?
Solar Striker is a very early GB game. It's very basic and I don't care for it much.
Project S-11 for GBC is a fun little shooter. It has fantastic 8-bit music.
Actually, I saw a complete copy of this at a store near me. If the game interests you, maybe I'll go pick up the boxed one for myself and trade you my cart only? The label is a little worn, but its not too bad and the game works just fine.
Here's another vid with just music.

Re: good GB/GBA shmups?
so I actually did a brief rundown of 4 GBA shmups on my blog:
http://www.rfgeneration.com/blogs/noise ... s-1341.php
including Invader which I love. However, the comments left on my blog led me to investigate the cart a bit further, and it seems that maybe the game is a lot more rare than I previously thought?

Looks like I'll have to check out Iridion II. I just assumed it was like Irirdion 3D, which I hated.noiseredux wrote:so I actually did a brief rundown of 4 GBA shmups on my blog:

It's overall a platformer, but there's shmup segments.noiseredux wrote:Astro Boy is a shmup? I had no idea. Thought it was a platformer. Hmm.k.vlaros wrote:Hey buddy, there's one screaming omission from your list, and it's a real cracker:
Astro Boy Omega Factor. A truly great game.
And if you want to take a slight left turn, I dug playing through and getting 'all golds' on Medal of Honor Infiltrator. Another deviation from the norm would be the Metal Slug series- I want to get the US GBA version eventually.
I agree about R-Type, the ship is rather large - or is it that the tunnels are often confined - but I give it a sentimental handicap as I played it to death on NES as a kid. And eventually I want to find Gunstar Super Heroes, but I'm not sure if it's actually all that great (I just like the screen shots I've found).
As for recommendations:
Battle Unit Zeoth
