Edit: I just remembered another thing haha. I never been to one myself but watching Lukemorse1's videos on youtube, he always goes to a used electronics store called Hard-off. In there you can find literally boxes upon boxes filled with every video game players/collectors wet dream. All for ridiculous prices like 300yen. The one bad thing though is sometimes some of the consoles have something needed to be fixed on them, usually it'll be written what the problem is on a sticker, but obviously written in japanese. They also have a huge selection of games on the cheap. If you're into cheap manga or anime figires they also have stores called Book-off and Hobby-off.

Hard Off is great, but your description of the place is highly exaggerated. Some Hard Offs have NOTHING, while others are gold mines. I have been to just about every Hard Off location in Kanto, Chubu, and Tohoku regions of JApan. The Nishikawa Hard Off in Utsunomiya (Tochigi Prefecture) is the best by far. Working Famicom units for 500 yen, Saturns for 1000 yen, etc etc....and they weren't in the JUNK bin.

Ahh okay. I haven't actually been to hard off, when I was in Japan I didn't know about it unfortunately :(. All i know about it is from the videos of lukemorse1 going there, which from his videos it looks like theyre fully stocked all the time haha.

Thanks, I'll be sure to check Liberty and the other places around. Thanks for all the heads up about prices.

To get back to my original question though, any recommendations of games to add to my list? Much as I'd love a white Saturn I have a modded black one that does the job and I don't think I'd have room for a second.

rec'd a few for the wonderswan if you wanted that. If you have a SNES, I'd grab Umihara kawase, or the DS port with both the SNES and PS1 games. GBA I'd rec Mother 3 and Kuru Kuru Kururin.

If you have a saturn, here's an image that may help you http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... _Games.jpg

Yep, I have a modded Saturn for region free and 60hz gaming so that image is quite helpful as it can be a problem identifying the games from box art with no english or recognisable image on them. I've seen the SNES game you mentioned before but had forgotten its name so I will definately add that to my list.

Also, does anyone know if the Saturn version of Castlevania: SOTN is worth getting as I have easy access to the XBLA version. I know it has some extras but I also read that the creator of the game is pretty down on them.

Is Radiant Silvergun actually any cheaper to obtain in Japan than via ebay scalpers?

I have Symphony of the Night for Saturn, it's a great game but I haven't played the PS1 version yet, so I have nothing to compare it to. If you see SOTN, DO NOT pay more than 2000 yen for it. If it's anything higher than 2500 yen, they're rippin people off.

The cheapest I've foundf Radiant Silvergun in a retail shop is 11,500 yen. IF you can find it at that price, get it. Usually Japanese online shops sell them cheap. Liberty will probably be the cheapest in Akiba. When I lived in Japan, I saved tons of money by buying them online or going to game shops in the boondocks.

Here is a link to Super Potato's online shop. They list RS at 13,800 yen.
If you go to the shop in Akiba, you're looking at 15,000 to 18,000 yen.

Right now is a really bad time to go to Japan because the exchange rate just shits all over the dollar. I miss the days of cheap yen. Oh well.

This is what game shops outside of Tokyo are like:

As I'm living in Sweden the value of the dollar doesn't bother me (Swedish videogame prices have to be some of the highest in the world).

Those shops look insane, is there any likelihood I could find any from the three places I'll be staying in Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto and Totori?

EDIT: I'll also be in Yokosuka for a day.

Hit Osaka today and visited two Super Potatoes and i have to say...major let down.

While the selection was fair to middling the prices were nothing i couldn't get on ebay and they had no Swan Crystals and to be honest not many consoles other than a couple of SNES's and Neo Geo units. The first one I visited was only one floor with the upstairs being all phone cards and the retro selection was tiny.

The second one in Den Den was a dark hot sweat house with a nice selection of games upstairs but (apart from the 20 yen Xmas Nights) some astonishingly bad prices (2000 yen for a cart only Super Smash TV?! )

In the end I left with only a boxed complete Super Firepro Wrestling Special for 100 Yen to my name.

The stores close buy were similarly priced and made me wish I'd bought more at the hard-off I visited recently.

I hope better fortunes find me in Akihabara
