Re: Mortal Kombat for Sega CD Review

I decided to play my copy on Sega CD. There are several things I don't like. First block being the middle buttons is stupid and you can't even change it. There is no control setup. Second while the music sounds close to the arcade it is of poor quality, like a down sampled version. Third while I don't mind loading for the most part, I hate the fact of it loading before a fatality.

Now the one thing I do like about this version is the blood is already there, no code. Between the SNES, Genesis and this version I would perfer the SNES one. I can't stand the graphics and sound in the Genesis port even if the gameplay is slightly faster and there is a blood code. The sega CD while sound and looks are slightly better then the Genesis port the loading makes it par for the course.

As much as I'd love to, my voice sucks on Camera, and I don't have a Video Capture Device. :)
Great review, brought back memories of that older fighter.

Suggested video reviews are meh, sometimes a pain to load.
Just add pics (like Google Images) like this guy did.

I remember Mortal Kombat. Really big in the Arcades, digitized fighters rocked with quick responses from controller. That Death Punch "Finish Him" really a satisfying blast.

What on earth are you talking about? The SNES version had no blood trick.

You could put blood in with the game genie.

Who cares? Everything else is still censored.

Says you. I don't like it at all for Mortal Kombat games. I find it impossibly difficult to execute moves and especially finishing moves with.

That doesn't count. It's not a "blood code" like the Genesis/Sega CD, it's a cheat device that just changes the colour of the sweat. The fatalities are still wrong.

At least the SNES fatalities are better then the no blood code Genesis fatalities. I always liked Rayden's and Sub-zero's fatality better on snes.

Genesis w/ and w/out blood

SNES fatalities

I bought the Genesis version on "Mortal Monday" and can honestly say that I've NEVER even tried the game without the blood code.

When I watch the youtube video you linked to, it will be my first time seeing the other fatalities, believe it or not.

edit: wow, they are incredibly lame

I honestly find that shocking since I don't have any problems whatsoever with it. The learning curve for finishing moves in MK2 and 3 is pretty steep, though, and that doesn't have anything to do with the D-pad (it seems nearly spot-on with the arcade version as well). Maybe that's the cause of the problem you're having. I'm a huge MK fan and it took me a ton of practice to be able to pull off the fatalities in those games on a consistent basis.
