And isn't this thread about how poorly many of the ebay cables function? If you get a cable from Racket and it doesn't work, I'll bet you can get a replacement pretty easy and quick quite unlike the Hong Kong based ebay sellers.

I had to register just to say this:

I managed to reposition the pins in an official composite cable and Used a spare s-video+audio cable to make my own official-looking S-Video cable that looks GREAT! I'll put up a how-to guide with pictures if I ever get the chance. I already had enough parts around to make 2 of these, so I think this might be useful for other people in my situation that simply couldn't get an s-video cable.

I first bought a cheap cable with both composite and s-video from a local game shop, the only place anywhere near me that even had SNES/N64/GC cables. It had the horrible pattern. My friends were coming over to play Mario Kart 64 and I needed to improvise. On a 52" TV, N64 is going to look terrible no matter what...so I wanted the picture quality to be as good as possible. I'm very proud of the result!

Probably a bad cable. Composite and S-Video are separate pinouts. All consoles that support S-Video are like that.

The pinouts looking at the cable end:

1 Red
2 Green
3 Composite Sync (may not be present on PAL machines)
4 Blue
5 Ground
6 Ground
7 S-Video Y
8 S-Video C
9 Composite Video
10 +5V
11 Mono Audio
12 L-R (used to calculate stereo)

Sticking a composite signal on both the Y and C will do nothing.... but I digress.

Someone earlier in this thread mentioned that putting composite out through both chroma and luma would result in the strange pattern that these cheap so-called "s-video" cables were putting out. The cheap cable I bought at the local game shop had the same pattern on the screen as described, but I couldn't crack it open to see how it was wired (because I had to get my money back and it was glued).

By repositioning the pins from an official composite cable and combining two grounds onto 1 pin, I made a real s-video cable.

I'll put up some pictures soon.

Let me get this straight though... How much of a difference is there from and S-video cable for my GC/Snes/N64 than from my normal SCART cable? Is it really worth buying?

'Normal Scart" is just cvbs, meaning its the same as composite. Some SCART is SVIDEO, I dont know which one is used for the SNES. How many pins does it have, if memory serves correct 10 pin = Composite.

Most of the time, this mislabel is actually the S-Video cable.
