Not to mention if you scratch the foil on the top (IE the bit you write on) then the disc will become unreadable in that sector. It's possible to scratch that layer off completely on cheap discs.Pulsar_t wrote:Pity the same cannot be said for burned media. I have NEVER actually broken a disk, I in fact have a very robust copy of POD for PC that has been...
1) Dropped out of a moving vehicle, disk only, no case.
2) Slammed in a car door
3) dipped in Motor oil
4) covered in a juice
5) burnt with a lighter (only slightly)
After all of that, the disk works perfectly.

You must really hate that game, or hate losing in it .......DNT 2.5 wrote:I have NEVER actually broken a disk, I in fact have a very robust copy of POD for PC that has been...

Re: How long will cd's last?
Yeah, CDs I burnt seem to last about 6-7 years, burnt DVDs are a bit better. I've never had problems with any pressed CDs or DVDs that weren't physically damaged, even ones from the early 90s.

Thats why I love emulationZiggy587 wrote:I'd be much more worried about the PS1 lasting, the disc will far out live the console.
A lot of the people want to get the "genuine" experience, to me if the game is working just as it was on the original console with almost the same controller, thats genuine enough
Re: How long will cd's last?
Well luckily most game consoles are fussy and require that you burn at slower speeds. I'm pretty sure burning slowly will help the disc last longer. Burning at max speed all the time can't be good. I cap my burning speed from within the properties of the drive, so even if I set a program to burn at 48x it wont.Pulsar_t wrote:Pity the same cannot be said for burned media. It's been said plenty of times that with out emulation some games would be lost forever (like old arcade games). So I'll agree with this. I'll ALWAYS hands down choose real hardware over emulation. But hopefully once it becomes impossible to find a working PS1 on planet Earth, the emulators for it will be absolutely perfect.kingmohd84 wrote:Thats why I love emulationZiggy587 wrote:I'd be much more worried about the PS1 lasting, the disc will far out live the console.

Of course, you'll have to keep your broken PS1 on a shelf some where so that you can legally use an emulator. Otherwise Sony might sue you.
Re: How long will cd's last?
Yeah, there's always emulation if your discs ever go kaput. Pirates are a blessing for still providing access to your old games even when the original game companies have long forgetten them.

Re: How long will cd's last?
I've said it once and I'll say it again, someone (Or us) should manufacture a hard drive attachment that can connect to the CD driveconnection inside of older CD based systems like the PS1, Sega CD, Saturn, etc... and act as if it were the CD drive and load up games such as HD Loader for the PS2.
Seriously, that would be an awesome and instantaneous purchase for me, especially with the ability to upgrade the HDD and choose between different interface formats such as SATA, good old IDE or future interface standards.
Now let's get cracking on it!

HDAdvance/HDLoader capabiliy for PS1 or modded to work on PS2 internal drive. Just think of all those 700mb discs packed on a Hard drive. Now that would be a huge convenient library of menu driven games! I mean a hard drive attachment for older consoles such as the Saturn, PS1, Sega CD or a multitude of other consoles as the CD drives begin failing from age. Sadly it's literally impossible to run PS1 games via the PS2's HDD since the PS1 processor inside the PS2 acts as the I/O processor for the PS2's HDD when in PS2 mode and once in PS2 mode the PS1 portion of the PS2 cannot be activated.
