i don't know what everybody is so upset about. somebody else offered more money. you would be stupid not to take free money. it doesn't matter if old, young, purple, poor, rich. more money is more money. and as far as "breaking the deal," did you guys sign a contact or anything? i am guessing not.

yeah, it sucks you lost a deal, but that's life. sometimes you win, sometimes you loose.

At least you gave the seller the courtesy that you would not show, I think after that price raise I would have left him waiting at that meeting place alone. There will be another opportunity for a better deal.

I'm inclined to disagree. Sometimes business ethics are far more important than just getting more money, especially when you've already arranged a deal and meeting place. The guy was truly a jerk for breaking his word just to make an extra $10.

The deal was made, there was a time and a meeting place arranged. The seller didn't even give him the message. It was just a reply to Ivo's SMS. I'm guessing that if he didn't receive the SMS, the seller would've brought the price increase up at the last minute, wasting Ivo's time and gas. The seller was doing bullshit business practices.

I would have done the same. Screw that guy, he's a dick. Anyways, good move man. Another deal will surely come along.

Because Ivo was on his way (wasting his own time and gas money) to make the agreed upon transaction. Had Ivo's seller been a seller here on racketboy, he would end up with a -1.

I would also like to add that it would be very different (and I wouldn't even vent here) if he had messaged me saying he was sorry for dropping the deal, but he had another buyer that offered him more.

What he did was reply, and saying that I could offer X to get it. For all I know, the other buyer was going to give him 110 as well, but as he had that "luxury" he tried to hike the price on me. Maybe he did have an offer of 120 (as I say, it isn't unlikely, although at 120 the price isn't good, just normal IMO), but at least he should warn me, and it would be nice to add an apology on top.

Ivo.

Not to threadjack, but I wanted to comment on this:

thecommontask wrote: In the states there's a show called "Pawn Stars" about these guys who run a pawn shop in Las Vegas. I really hate watching it because people who have no idea what they have come in there and say I want to pawn/sell this thing here. So the owners of the shop either know what it is oer they have an expert come in to give them a value range of the item. Long story short the pawn shop is always being dicks and offering the customer less and less for their valuable items. It saddens me to see this sometimes.

Why would you expect a pawn shop, or any reseller for that matter, to give someone the full value of their item? If you were to sell a $50 value item to another collector, I can see that person paying the value, but for a reseller, no. That reseller is buying the item in order to resell it and make money. That is the nature of their business. When they buy an item, they are putting out money on something that may sit on their shelf for an hour or a year. That is money that is lost to the business until that item sells. You said that you have seen the show. Then you have seen all the items that they have their capital tied up in. When they sell an item, they need to get enough to cover the cost of the item and well as to cover the operating expenses of the business and to make some profit.

Here is the beautiful thing about this whole procedure, at any time the potential seller has the option to say, "No Thanks", and walk out the door.
