Videogames and altered states of consciousness

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

well, honestly, that's why i asked. i knew this was a semi-tame forum and didn't want to talk about getting totally fucking ripped and playing saturn bomberman or anything without getting the okay to do so first.

While I was on pain medication for kidney stones I played through Rez HD from beginning to end, without losing, and without any interruptions from the outside world, and that was the craziest shit EVER. It was the epitome of the phrase "in the zone". I'm not gonna lie, it was one of the best gaming experiences that I've ever had.

I was so messed up on medication that the end of the game made me tear up... Let me just say that again here, the pain meds were so strong, that the end of FUCKING REZ HD made me cry.

So yeah, I'd say that games have put me in an altered state of consciousness... with the help of prescription drugs.

The title does sort of imply that. I say we talk about it, it doesn't really seem like something that would be against the rules here. But hey, I'm new and could be wrong.

I haven't really done many drugs in my life (Not including stuff I use when I have a cold or something :) ). The only drugs that have any sort of mood altering effects I've used are Alcohol and Marijuana. I've never really played video games while drunk, and only been stoned with access to video games once in my life (Guitar Hero 2) [Couldn't exactly go home stoned and play video games because yeah, I'd get in trouble from my mum back then :D ]

I really want to get high and play a few good video games though, I think it would be awesome and probably give me a new perspective on the video game. (Ok, mostly I just want to play high cause' it would be awesome fun!)
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

I've never really experienced a change in state of consciousness from a game, though from time to time there will be games that I find are extremely mentally stimulating, like Psychonauts for example.

Well, you can post what you want, but I'm talking about games that have trance-enducing properties vaguely similar to drugs. I'm not really interested in how stoned somone was that one night while playing that one game.

Wow. Gridrunner is pretty out there, and a lot of fun.

Playing Eternal Darkness in the dark (repetitive right?) can take you places.

I never use or plan to use drugs, but there have been times where I seemingly become 'one' with a game and just completely zone into it, like I'm hardly conscious of it anymore. That new unicorn flash game, for example, after a while.
