Emulation is never going to be quite right, as the NES relies on NTSC artifacting for some of its colors. Some emulators do support an NTSC emulation plugin, but IMO it looks significantly worse than the real thing.
Since you're having trouble with the 72 pin connector, and the top loader has no composite out, you may be best off going with the famicom. I haven't tried so I don't know for sure though. A/V modded top loader is another option. Whichever is easiest/cheapest. Personally, I stick with the original NES with a new 72 pin connector.
Maybe consider a PowerPak? Then you only need to get it seated correctly once, and never remove it again. That's a fairly expensive route though.

Id go with buy a toaster and make your own ghetto version of the NES 2, simply becasue you could find one in horrible condition that still works for really cheap, and put a new case on it.

I just use my retro duo with an snes controller. Seems to be working fine for me. Doesn't play all games I guess, but it's not like I'll ever beat battletoads anyway.

Thanks to all so much - some great ideas...well except the time machine, i've already killed 2 cats in my retro 80-2000xp...
I have to defend myself a bit - my cart contacts are minty fresh, I teach classes on cleanin the carts.
I've been fighting what my instincts have been saying, play them on the wii, but I may have to give in. But will def research the FC 2 w/wireless controllers and the nestopia ideas before caving...thanks again!

screw the Wii, NesterDC6 is a better route, especially considering how much less the hassle is. DC controllers might not be perfect (though they do have a cross-style d-pad), but it's alot better than a damn Wiimote. You can also get PS2 and Saturn adapters for the DC for about $20 a pop. Even better, DC has VGA adapters for compatibility with HD TVs, though I'm not sure if it's compatible with NesterDC or not, but I would guess it is.mjmjr25 wrote:Thanks to all so much - some great ideas...well except the time machine, i've already killed 2 cats in my retro 80-2000xp...

I think you can use the Classic Controller on the Virtual Console.17DaysOlderThanNES wrote:though they do have a cross-style d-pad), but it's alot better than a damn Wiimote.

...which still sucks. With a Total Control Plus you can use anything available for the PS2, including that very NES style Madcatz Retrocon:GSZX1337 wrote:I think you can use the Classic Controller on the Virtual Console.17DaysOlderThanNES wrote:though they do have a cross-style d-pad), but it's alot better than a damn Wiimote.

I'd say you might look into the AV Famicom, it's supposed to be the same as our toploader, only it has proper AV outputs. I've never used either, but I figure it's worth a shot.
