Could probably carefully add a bit of solder in the missing bit, then carefully sand or carve so its flat and not a big bump. I dunno, but its probably fixable, don't toss it. You NEED flux. If your solder doesn't have a flux core than you need to use separate flux. I recommend liquid flux because the paste flux is really hard to work with in my opinion. Also, it helps when all the contacts are clean. You rarely have to clean new or newer components, but something old like a NES might have corrosion and whatnot. You can clean with rubbing alcohol, and some fluxes can actually clean too.
You can get 50/50 lead/tin solder with a rosin (flux) core from Radio Shack. They might have 60/40 which is also fine, as long as it has a flux core and isn't lead free. Repeat, stay away from lead free solder.

I am having this very same problem. The damn thing played games rarely and only after reinserting it about 100 times. So I decide to put in a new connector. White screen and no blinking light. I am baffled because I cleaned the pins with steel wool and that didn't help. Is there any alternative to using a soldering iron considering I don't have one?

I feel really really really fucking stupid now. I cleaned the pins of the motherboard with windex and it works now... thank you guys
