Still, you could say the exact same about the WSPA ads as you can about any advertisements for human relief like Unicef and the like. Even though they all do good work, they show the people/animals in need in the most cruel and worst possible condition.
We've all seen the pictures of little starving African kids covered in flies and crowding together, nearly trampling each other, over a little cup of rice given to them because they simply can't provide their own resources anymore.
And then they show pictures of some other children, looking much better fed and sitting in a classroom, showing what exactly the charity does.
Of course, not all children suffer like that, but the ones that pull at your heartstrings are the ones that you'd most likely give money for, and of course, it's not fun to look at... But that's what works.

KILL 'EM ALL!! LET GOD SORT 'EM OUT!!
But seriously, these commercials do make me all teary eyed.. and make me want to hug my dog and cat. As for the Humans vs. Animals sub topic that the last few have posted.... just think of man-bear-pig. He's half man, half bear and half pig. Is he getting any donations. No. How will he/she/it survive without your support?

I wanted to vent about something today, but didn't want to start another thread unless it involves me protecting parking spaces. But, hopefully this will put things into perspective for some people (I'm not pointing fingers).
My wife's friend, and co-worker lost her baby last night. She was 8 months pregnant, and the baby was due March 22nd, but went into early labor, and the baby didn't make it. The would be Mother is 26.
Gets worse. After the still birth, the Mom has chest pains, and now is in critical condition. She isn't expected to live through the night, and my wife is visiting with her family as I type. My wife told me to stay put, and although I'd like to be with her, she knows best.
Unbelievable.

I am willing to bet most of these animals are fed and housed and put to sleep in a month or two. A commanding majority of people won't adopt them because of the baggage that can come with a troubled animal. Sad but true. Maybe that is a good outcome, Certainly better then the neglect they had received. But I can't see the effectiveness compared to giving money for humans to eat and survive. To say these people are whining babies is flat out ignorant. All of us here are lucky to have the life we have and to criticize the ones that have it rough is ridiculous.slowslow325 wrote:
With these animals they will get out of the bad situation and be healed of their illnesses and injuries. From here they can be adopted or whatever.
The web's first video game public library! http://videogameexperiment.com rents all games for free and sells them for less than Ebay and Amazon! Plus we take anything in on trade-in.

Things aren't going well. Apparently her water didn't break, and she suffered cardiac arrest from the amniotic fluid. She's on a respirator, but her liver and kidneys are shutting down.puke_face wrote:

Dude!!!! What the hell is wrong with you?!?! You spend money to feed those rescued animals, when PEOPLE in Haiti are in need of food, too. Man you are a fucked up individual!!!!dsheinem wrote:Wow. I don't know what kind of twisted worldview you've been conditioned into, but to not care about "Haiti and "the like"' shows zero human compassion, to assume that they are "whiny babies" is naive at best. I guess I'm of the opinion that compassion for a fellow human who is suffering is of much greater significance than compassion for a suffering animal. Neither is acceptable, but if forced to prioritize there can be no question!
I love animals. I have 2 rescue dogs, a rescue cat, and an old horse and am always careful about who cares for them when I can't. Frankly, it's this kind of arrogance and indifference that marks the kind of individuals who do abuse and abandon their dogs. I wouldn't even want you giving any of my pets a treat.
If you actually read my post I wasn't really talking about WSPA, but about rescuing animals in general. Your point was we shouldn't rescue animals when we can rescue people. Another argument that comes up from your point of view is, what if my brother was dieing and I spent several thousand dollars to save his life, when I could easily have used that to help people in Haiti. Why did I do that then, because people in Haiti aren't my fucking problem!I am willing to bet most of these animals are fed and housed and put to sleep in a month or two. slowslow325, I really can't tell which side you are arguing for and the foul language spread throughout isn't making it any easier to understand.slowslow325 wrote:Dude!!!! As others have said, the comments about the people of Haiti seem naive at best. The percentage of money that actually goes to the Haitian government is extremely low (I want to say 1-3%, but I do not remember my sources). The issue is not about just giving them money. For those that want to make donations there are several organizations all handling and funneling the donations differently. In addition if you'd like your donation to go towards a specific objective that can be done. This is common with any donation and does not just pertain to Haiti. Sure there may be organizations that do a less thorough job or decide to give it to the government (where you believe it will be wasted and the people won't learn), but the same can be said with all donations and charitable acts. Money given to organizations to protect animals can also mismanage the money.
I'm not disagreeing with you (though I think I would give humans priority) I am just confused by your response to dsheinem's post. You seem to believe someone's efforts can only be one-sided and must be black or white. Perhaps it was heavy sarcasm or trying to catch dsheinem in a contradiction because he has put money towards saving animals (the thing you claimed to love), but each person can choose to spend their money how they see fit. I might make large donations to Haiti, but perhaps there would be an opportunity in my community to help an animal and thus that would also become an option. Just because someone believes in a priority for helping humans doesn't mean they can't do any other kind of help...
Look the "don't spend money on this because you could spend it on this other thing" argument is weak. It is not going to convince anyone to change their habits. I could make my own weak argument and say that you shouldn't be spending any of your money on videogames and that it should all go to charity no matter how minimal it is. The more we make those claims the further away from the discussion we get.
I'm not calling anyone out, but nothing has to be completely black and white. People will choose to spend money as they will and if its charitable all the better. It might not be going where you want it to, but its better than mindless consumerism.
Or maybe you're just trolling. I really can't tell.

This might make it a little clearer, my response to the first quote (the one with the most foul language) was complete sarcasm, which was pretty much using someone else's logic and put it to a different situation. The reason there was foul language was to emphasise the sarcasm, but you obviously didn't get that.molotovwars wrote: slowslow325, I really can't tell which side you are arguing for and the foul language spread throughout isn't making it any easier to understand.

Second of all, you said the argument is weak. That's what I am agreeing with. I think that whoever said we shouldn't air these commercials when we could be spending money on Haitians is completely stupid.
